Other Mary Janes in literature
- In Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn, there is a major character named Jane Mary, who is described as a hideous redhead and was probably not Stan Lee's inspiration for the comic book character.
- Mary Jane is the title character of Mary Jane and Mary Jane 2, both novels by Judith O'Brien.
these had nothing to do with mary jane watson.
- The two books by Judith O'Brien are by Marvel and even feature Spider-Man! --Fritz S. (Talk) 10:24, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
- Indeed so. To the anonymous user: check your facts before removing information. —Lowellian (reply) 15:32, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
Ultimate "Mary"
Call me stupid, but I kind of want to point out how in the early issues of Ultimate Spider-Man, there seemed to be a tendency for Mary Jane to be called "Mary", rather than "MJ"... pointless trivia really... but... gah, whatever. (195.92.168.170 02:21, 2 April 2006 (UTC))
Basketball Vandalism
Removed the many inserted references to MJ's "Mad Skillz" in the arts of Basketball... I'll start reporting if it happens again, but it did make me laugh. Check the page history. (195.92.168.174 11:46, 5 April 2006 (UTC))
Skills and equipment
I think there should be a short section on MJ's defensive skills and equipment. Eg, she's trained in self defence, was recently training with Captain America, has fended off normal attackers and the Chameleon, owns a gun, has a amplified spider-tracer, and has Peter's old web-shooters (modified into bracelets). (But as far as I know she's not particularly good at basketball. Anyway...) Thoughts? - HKMARKS 04:21, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- I added this section as there were no arguments. I'm not sure, but does anyone know who else trained her? I could have sworn Flash Thompson did. Or maybe she just took a class... - HKMARKS 05:34, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
Biography
I just did a big rewrite of the Biography section to remove NPOV statements, and provide more biographical information. I might add some of those statements back to the "Controversy" section later if they prove to be relevant and sourced when I look at them more carefully. Then again, maybe not. - HKMARKS 07:50, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
Dispute or no?
What's with the disputed section? How come there is no discussion? Has the dispute been resolved? Should I remove the dipsuted section warning? --Lenehey 18:06, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
- I came here because I noticed the dispute tag on the community page. I'd say the tone of the section needs some serious rewrites. Saying that the editors were out to get the character and such is a little bit much - stick to saying what happened in the stories, and not theorizing on the reasons unless references can be made to interviews. Ocicat 22:02, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
- There's a contradiction on MJ's first appearance (which I noticed because it's what I came to check. Was it Amazing Spideman #47 (cited first) or #42??? -bradydale@thistoowillpass.com
- It's #42. I'm positive I corrected that months ago, but anyway. Incidentally, #47 was the one that was parodied in Deadpool #11. MJ dances randomly in it. - HKMARKS 17:05, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Character boxes
I removed the character box for Ultimate Mary Jane. The reason being that if the Ultimate versions get them, why not every other version? And then it just gets cluttered. For the most part there isn't that huge a difference-- the only difference between 616 and Ultimate MJ that fits in the SSB is that Bendis and Bagley had a hand in her creation, and her first appearance. There was a short discussion on the subject here. -HKMarks 00:51, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
I agree too. Regardless of the fact I added it. But I see it's not needed. But if I may ask, why does the Gwen Stacy#Ultimate Gwen Stacy have a box? UnDeRsCoRe 04:05, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Bad news
I just found this out on the Spider-Man article...(sigh)..Mary Jane will die, in the new comic series of Spider-Man coming in 2007. (breaks down sobbing) 70.58.211.220
Any official source to confirm it? Even if so, I doubt it will be permanent. (Remember that disaterous plane crash, she was kidnapped only). UnDeRsCoRe 00:00, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
- From what I've seen, this is likely in the upcoming Spider-Man: Reign miniseries by Kaare Andrews. It takes place in a future timeline (with Peter Parker as an old man), not 616. Unless I'm very wrong, no need to worry. The preview art I've seen looks freaking gorgeous. -HKMarks 00:53, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
Thank goodness (phew!) 70.58.211.220
With Recent Events in civil War it looks like her death may be possible. Quesada hates the Spider-Marriage.
- I'm sorry to hear that. I see the point that Quesada, Alex Ross, et al., have -- that an everyman character like Peter Parker/Spider-Man should not be linked to a supermodel -- but I liked her as a character and I suppose I saw her as a means to show that a supposed Everyman can have a soulmate (cf. Michael Tucker and Jill Eikenberry in both real life and on L.A. Law) Ave atque vale, MJ. RahadyanS 04:13, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
I'm right with you on that. If it happens, fans will be pissed, and marvel better hope that movie crowd buys the books, because I wont.
- I don't believe MJ dies because of this leaked picture from the upcomming Sensational Spider-Man Annual due out in May 2007 which takes place after the Civil War. Leaked Sensational Spider-Man Annual Pics Neovu79 08:42, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:Maryjanenovel.jpg
Image:Maryjanenovel.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:46, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

Well if you read the spiderman that came out in free comic book it revealed a character called Jackpot who was quite clearly Mary Jane Watson.I think we should mention this in the article. Parralax

suggestions for improvement
This article should deal with the growing popularity of the character. In sequence: she became he wife of Spider-Man in 1987 She became the main supporting character and first and main love interest in Ultimate Spider-Man (nearly a co-feature) 1n 1999 She is the first and main love interest in the movie franchise She became the main character of two novels in 2003 She became the main character of her own comic (Mary Jane and Spider-Man loves Mary Jane) in 2004
Does she appear in Spidey Super Stories, Marvel Adventures Spider-Man?
Other versions: this should be in some sequence like alphabetical. I suggest chronological to underline her growing prominence. Except I don't know all the dates of the alternate versions. --Leocomix 15:04, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
Same ol' scenario
Anybody notice how Mary Jane's being used nowadays? She always appears in some media adaption first, and then Gwen Stacy comes and causes conflicts. That really annoys me. It's the same thing over and over again. Is there ever gonna be a media adaption truly loyal to what exactly happens in the comics? Sheesh. 71.217.235.164 20:11, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Deletion
This article is nominated for deletion? That's insane! She's one of Spider-Man's biggest supporting characters! The article is great. The deletion notice needs to be improved. --Vinnyvinny2 09:52, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
- I agree, the deletion notice is insane. "No superpowers, even"? Characters like Lois Lane or Lex Luthor don't have superpowers either, and yet are suitably major. Besides, Mary Jane is actually a relatively important character. Consider the exposure that she has had recently due to media like the Spider-Man films with Kirsten Dunst. This deletion suggestion is ludicrous. --Jayunderscorezero 13:01, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
- As a matter of fact, I've gone ahead and removed it. If anyone would honestly like to object, meaning that they think this article genuinely should be entirely deleted for the reasons stated in the original proposal, then please raise your concerns here on this page. --Jayunderscorezero 13:08, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
- The article is vastly too large and vastly too in-universe. Cruftbane 19:53, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
- Perhaps, but neither of those issues should lead immediately to deletion. If you feel that there are some issues with the page, feel free to edit and improve it. --Jayunderscorezero 10:06, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
- My vision of improving involves removal. Nothing beyond the lead is remotely encyclopaedic. Cruftbane 11:11, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
- That doesn't sound like it meets the deletion requirements (Though if you do think so, you should re-nominate it). Remember, Wikipedia is not paper and there is no due date. If you see an article that needs a touch up or a huge overhaul, be bold and take care of it. And could someone link to the deletion discussion? I can't seem to find it Notthegoatseguy 08:00, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

Controversies
Here I feel I must dispute the Controversies section under the entry for Mary Jane Watson. In this section it is stated that "...but fans vocally supported the feisty Mary Jane over the non-offensive Gwen Stacy. The pairing of Mary Jane and Peter Parker has become one of the true classic romances of the comic medium and the couple are considered to be one of the superhero genre's most beloved "super-couples," second possibly to Clark Kent and Lois Lane." Being alive at the time I can testify that most fans I knew always preferred Gwen Stacy to Mary Jane and to this day many of us resent the fact that Peter became involved with Mary Jane and today she is often portrayed as the true love of his life. To wit, in an article at Underground Online"Gwen Stacy (Bryce Dallas Howard)" it states, "...and, in some Spidey fan's eyes, she's the real "true love" of their favorite hero." In an Itani Rosenbaum's April 17, 2007 column at Silver Bullet Comics Behind The Panels #7 - Spider-Man Blue, Rosenbaum states that "...Gwen was, is, and always will be, Peter’s first true love. She was the girl of his dreams."
I realise that there are many younger fans, particularly those raised on the animated cartoons and the movie who probably prefer Mary Jane to Gwen and who probably feel that Mary Jane is his true love, but to me it appears that there is enough of a disagreement, particularly among older fans, that it can be disputed that fans overwhelmingly prefer Mary Jane to Gwen.

I read through half the article today and although I feel it is among the best the Wikipedia comic book community have created there is still much bias throughout the article and numerous spelling errors, it reads more like a personal essay than encyclopedia article. "Many fans have found this a constant irritation, and feel it "cheapens" MJ's love for Peter on his own merits without becoming aware of his powers." This is point of view. - Who created Spider-Man isn't really related to the character though, at least not in the way it is being implemented into the article. Yes, the two characters are associated with each other and they were both created by Stan Lee but I don't feel this information is appropriate in the opening sentences of the article. —DangerousJXD (talk) 11:23, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

- It's kind of hard to read, but I'd say based on your comments, no. If she was meant to be Mary Jane, she'd be called Mary Jane. Sources say they're not the same, such as Den of Geek, which is referenced in the Spider-Man: Homecoming article, and specifically says "this will be a very different thing, she’s not Mary Jane Watson, that’s not who the character is."[1] Chaheel Riens (talk) 14:48, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
