First openly lesbian woman elected??
[edit]"In the 2005 elections, she became the first openly lesbian woman elected to the New Zealand Parliament." This is not backed by the citation given. I don't know whether Marilyn Waring was openly lesbian when she was first elected, but surely she was by subsequent re-elections. I don't know whether Waring was even the first, but she is an earlier example that comes to mind. Nurg 06:46, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
- I was a voter during the 1970s in New Zealand (although not in Waring's electorate), but I don't remember any publicity about her sexuality, and it would have been a big deal at the time. I'm rather surprised to see a ref in her article which said she came out in the 1970s. Was there any press coverage of this?-gadfium 08:04, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
- I don't remember the 1970s as well as I thought I did. Maybe Street is the first (so many rumours about others!). I have made corrections to the Waring article. Nurg 07:02, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
- I found a ref that does claim she was the first openly lesbian woman elected as an MP in NZ, and replaced the previous ref. Accordingly, I have removed the template.-gadfium 08:18, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
