Untitled[edit]

Racial makeup is wrong for this. It says 75% is white, and 80% are hispanic. The math is all wrong. I'm white, so according to this, my people are -5% of the population. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.79.111.254 (talk) 17:00, March 24, 2006‎

It's because wikipedia articles on population demographics in cities invariably use the official US census categories, and most hispanics are counted as "white" in the census. Some hispanics may also be counted as "black," however (think Sammy Sosa). So that accounts for the difference. 75% of residents are white (including both Anglos and Hispanics) and 80% are Hispanics (including "white hispanics" and "black hispanics"). I agree, it's rather misleading, and it's a big problem in wikipeda articles. If you are familiar with McAllen and the Valley, you know that the overwhelming majority of the population is Mexican, and can figure out what the demographic breakdown probably means But if you're not-- you could get the impression that there is a 3/4 majority of Anglos living along the border (!), or simply get confused since the numbers don't add up to 100% (given that the categories are like comparing "race" to "ethnicity", i.e., apples to oranges). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 169.252.4.21 (talk) 06:58, April 5, 2006

Just read the web page on McAllen.[edit]

And being from McAllen, born and raised, I feel that the short description of my city is accurate. Although I do agree with the previous person who left a comment on this web page about the racial makeup, the census bureau population counts are not accurate counting many American’s from Mexican descent as white is very misinforming. The census bureau's figures are based on how people describe themselves. There are usually two questions on the census form, one being "What race? White, African American, Asian, Native American, Pacific Islander, mixed race or other?" and the other being "Are you Hispanic/Latino or not?" Most Hispanics/Latinos will answer "white" to the first question and "yes" to the second (although some will give other answers for the first question, especially "other"), while most Anglos will answer "white" to the first question and "no" to the second. I suspect that the vast majority of the 15.85% in McAllen who declared themselves to be of "other" races were Hispanics who felt uncomfortable calling themselves "white" even though other people with basically the same ethnic background did call themselves "white". Certainly, some of the Mexicans who arrive from Monterrey are "white" and mostly or fully European. Most of the local Mexican Americans are definitely Mestizo and "brown." Mexico is roughy 10% white, 70% Mestizo, 20% Indian. One has to go by what the Census Bureau states...or else you may get city articles where people write nonsense like "While 78.2% of the people are White, many of these people are not really what you and I would call white." Some of this article still reads too much like a tourist bureau advertisement, i.e., the "musical sounds of the Spanish language," etc. There is still too much POV. History?[edit]

I hate Mcallen and think it's the scum of all Texas towns. I would much rather live in Corpus, Laredo or even Abilene or Lubbock bedore I'd have to live in McAllen. YUCK. ()I'm allowed to say that, this is a discussion page)

I'm not quite sure I'd say McAllen is the "scum" of Texas towns; I agree, except for the beach, the Valley definitely sucks. But would you really rather live in Roma? La Feria? Donna?? Or Brownsville, for that matter? Now those places SUCK. Education[edit]

Justification for the Deletion of University of Texas–Pan American[edit]

The University of Texas–Pan American has been deleted from this article due to the fact that the university belongs to another city thus making the statement irrelevant. The city of McAllen doesn't have a University it only has a community college. Thus, I renamed the content section to read "Community College." --F15 sanitizing eagle (talk) 20:11, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Crime / Gangs[edit]

Does anybody have any info/statistics on crime and gangs? That's what I came to the McAllen page to read about. I remember passing through McAllen in the early 1960's on vacation on the way to Mexico and it was lovely, but I imagine that, like Houston etc that it now has a large component of crime and gangs. Any info? Perhaps somebody in law enforcement in McAllen who read this can add the info.   • Crime stats in McAllen aren't really that notable. Yes, there's crime, but just like any fast-growing urban area. If anything, the McAllen area is a drug trafficking corridor for the Gulf Cartel, but it happens under water. If you find any reliable sources that indicate something extraordinary about McAllen, please put them in the talkpage so we can discuss them. Cheers. There was some unformatted data and a random link, neither of which seemed very helpful to the main idea of the paragraph. I've included it below if somebody want to clean up, cite, and put it back if they feel it's relevant.

Advert/Dubious info[edit]

After reading several parts of the article, the edits on here boast about the city too much. Also, poverty rate data is incorrect. Being that McAllen is the poorest area in the US, I find it odd when the poverty rate is 20%. When you type 'mcallen poverty rate', 33% of residents and almost 46% of children are below the poverty line. Editor(s) on here are trying to promote the city.

No city, especially one with a small population such as McAllen, places 2012 census estimates at the top of the Demographics section, while later mentioning 2000 census data, which by the way has inaccurate data.
