78 illustrations for one building is excessive

[edit]

That is what the link to Wkimedia Commons is for. Choose the best and delete the rest.

  • ONE interior of prayer hall
  • ONE exterior of minaret
  • ONE courtyard
  • ONE buttressed wall et etc.

Then choose about six of the very best details, and put them into a single gallery. Amandajm (talk) 03:26, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In some cases, we can chose more than one (example first section, or those of the prayer hall or the mihrab), but beyond that indeed the use of the gallery is suited and relevant. Cordially, Quincy2010 (talk) 14:54, 2 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Exterior of dome

[edit]

This material ought not be jammed in the middle of a paragraph about the interior of the building. There should be a separate section on domes, with a proper lead-in sentence.

From the outside, the dome of the mihrab is based on an octagonal drum with slightly concave sides, raised on a square base, decorated on each of its three southern, Easter and western faces with five flat-bottomed niches surmounted by five semi-circular arches,[1][2] the niche in the middle is cut by a lobed oculus enrolled in a circular frame. This dome, whose construction goes back to the first half of the ninth century (towards 836), is one of the oldest and most remarkable domes in the western Islamic world.[3] Amandajm (talk) 03:35, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Alt captions

[edit]

There seems to be a misunderstanding here about what to put in an alt caption.

Alt captions are for people listening to a reading, and unable to see the pictures, i.e. generally for blind people.

Writing alt captions:

  • Remember the alt caption is always read first, so you must identify the subject: e.g. "Photo of the courtyard of the mosque", even if the words "Courtyard of the Mosque" are repeated.
  • Tell what you can see: "Photo of the courtyard of the mosque surrounded by arcades supported on many columns. Pilgrims are entering through a door to the left."
  • Your alt caption must contain no information that cannot be seen (except for the name of the subject). It is not a place to store additional information. This means that you do not write "The carving is of cedar". Put that information where everyone can read it.
  • Remember most blind people have previously been sighted, or else have some vision. Blind people like to here what colour a thing is.
