The copyright page in the book says:

Bass was Hughes's literary assistant and Gates is one of the best-known African American intellectuals. I'm not sure why the authors' estates didn't renew the copyright. — Malik Shabazz ^Talk/_Stalk 22:45, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
