Size of the Nisshin Maru[edit]

Though it's constantly being changed on this page, for whatever reason... it should be noted that the Nisshin Maru is the second largest vessel of the Japanese fleet, not the largest. The Hiyo Maru (formerly "Oriental Bluebird") is still an active member of the whaling fleet, as of January 2010, and is larger than the Nisshin Maru in every possible parameter (length, width, draft, and tonnage). Greenpeace dispute[edit]

The following sentence is disputed by Greenpeace: "In January 2006 the MY Arctic Sunrise, an icebreaker operated by Greenpeace, collided with the Nisshin Maru." Greenpeace's website contains details here: http://oceans.greenpeace.org/en/our-oceans/whaling/antarctic-whaling/ramming

I propose rephrasing it in a way that respects the fact that it is disputed by the two parties concerned: "The Nisshin Maru and Greenpeace's MY Arctic Sunrise collided in December 1999 and in January 2006. "

Japanese Whaling Debate[edit]

I have deleted the extended section recently added on the whaling debate. The grammar was poor, the argument POV and anyway I can't see how a debate over public opinion poll figures on whaling belong in an article about a ship. It might be better to consider this material for the article Whaling in Japan. RomaC 04:31, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New IMO Regulations[edit]

It appears this portion of the article is wrong. The new IMO regulations are specific to new ships. To quote

Special measures to protect the Antarctic to be considered for approval
The MEPC approved, with a view to adoption at its next session (MEPC 60 in March 2010), proposed draft amendments to MARPOL Annex I on Special requirements for the use or carriage of oils in the Antarctic area.
The proposed draft amendments would add a new chapter 9 with a new regulation 43, which would prohibit the carriage in bulk as cargo, or carriage and use as fuel, of: crude oils having a density at 15°C higher than 900 kg/m3; oils, other than crude oils, having a density at 15°C higher than 900 kg/m3 or a kinematic viscosity at 50°C higher than 180 mm2/s; or bitumen, tar and their emulsions. An exception is envisaged for vessels engaged in securing the safety of ships or in a search and rescue operation.
So it looks like the ship would be excuded based on its fuel source, along with a number of other ships (apparently the purpose-built ships that resupply McMurdo Station would run afoul of this as well).--Terrillja talk 19:44, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
On the issue of fuel. It is not known that the Nisshin Maru even uses heavy oil, though it is most likely. It also does not preclude the Nisshin Maru from legally operating, as IFO 180s that meet the performance standards would allow the vessel to continue working as-is but at a higher cost.66.235.8.134 (talk) 03:51, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Image deleted[edit]

Well, the image of the ship used in the infobox was deleted. True to style, the wiki users debating the deletion didn’t talk the least bit about finding a suitable replacement for the image or think to mention it here. So it’s up to us now.
