Notability?

[edit]

I wonder what makes this person notable aside from the fact that he persecuted the hero Aristides de Sousa Mendes. Is that enough of a distinction to merit a Wiki entry? Also, the piece is quite incoherent and badly written. Beebop211 (talk) 23:43, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If it is accurate that he served as Minister of Commerce and Industry , then he meets the notability guideline WP:POLITICIAN. According to WP:POLOUTCOMES, "Elected and appointed political figures at the national cabinet level are generally regarded as notable . . ." Also, if the article is accurate that "he was one of the main builders of the corporativist politics of the Portuguese Estado Novo", then that is also a strong indication of notability. That being said, the article certainly needs work. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 01:33, 16 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Why is this noteworthy?

Marriage and children

He married Isabel Maria van Zeller Pereira Palha (Lisbon, Santa Engrácia, October 26, 1903 –), daughter of Constantino Nicolau Pereira Palha and wife and cousin Maria do Patrocínio Pereira Palha van Zeller, of a family of large landowners, and had issue:

Pedro van Zeller Palha Teotónio Pereira (Cascais, Estoril, November 26, 1927 –)
Maria Madalena van Zeller Palha Teotónio Pereira (Cascais, Estoril, March 26, 1929 –)
Clara van Zeller Palha Teotónio Pereira (Lisbon, Santa Engrácia, August 5, 1934 –)

This is not a genealogy website. There is a box for this type of info; it's not appropriate in the body of the article. Beebop211 (talk) 01:23, 16 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Normally, a biography will mention only the parents, notable siblings, spouses, and number of children. In my opinion, children should be mentioned by name only if they are notable. If the person had a famous ancestor and that is widely mentioned in coverage of them, then it may be appropriate to mention that. But there is no need to mention spouses relatives, unless highly notable. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 01:41, 16 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

On the footnote - Why Pereira stopped Sousa Mendes ?

Also the aidemémoire sent by the British embassy in Lisbon to the MNE complaining about the behavior of the consul in Bordeaux who demanded extra taxes from British citizens requesting visas:

"The Portuguese Consul at Bordeaux has been deferring until after office hours all applications for visas and has then been charging them at a special rate; in at least one case the applicant has also been requested to contribute to a Portuguese charitable fund before the visa was granted. "

Avraham Milgram says "This was too much. Not only did he grant free visas to thousands of refugees without permission, but he also demanded an extraordinary payment from British subjects, in whom Salazar had a special interest."JPratas (talk) 10:23, 19 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
