Explanation of viewpoint[edit]

I'm confused - this article doesn't explain their argument at all. For example, if piracy were legal, why would people create art? Can someone expand this article with argument for and against them? Thanks Rm999

Take a look at anti-copyright.-- Roc VallèsTalk|Hist - 11:11, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
I created art when piracy were legal and I did it because it was fun. --212.247.27.98 18:26, 5 April 2007 (UTC)--212.247.27.98 18:26, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
One may argue the exact opposite: That copyright protections REDUCE the incentive to create art, by creating a legal disincentive. Before publishing a work, one must take great legal care to ensure that it does not resemble any of millions of copyrighted works in any substantial way. Compare, for example, the extraordinary number of works produced during the renaissance with the number of works introduced since the introduction of copyright law, taking into consideration the immense difficulty of production and reproduction during the renaissance vs. the ease of modern production and reproduction. While there is an argument for the most basic of copyright protections (the prohibition of direct duplication of a work with the intent of financial gain or fraud), modern copyright extends far beyond such reasonable protection. Apart from the doctrines of communism and socialism, I do not believe that anyone rational has implied that an artist should not be allowed to profit from their works.
Further, given the disincentive of the legal ramifications of releasing a work without intense research of prior art, it may also be argued that copyright law harms the individual and aids the collective of a corporation - which runs contrary to some of the core principles of both capitalist and democratic societies.
The arguments for and against copyright are, of course, beyond the scope of the article. 68.166.26.100 07:08, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
Please keep this discussion focused on improving the article. -- intgr [talk] 01:06, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
The arguments for and against copyright used by this organization are within the scope of this article, and are already somewhat in the article. The publications they disseminate, the opinons they advertise, these are arguments against copyright.--Keerllston 19:55, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Piratbyrån just published a report on their activities of 2007, including a self-description rather different from the description presented on Wikipedia: http://piratbyran.org/PBverksamhet2007/PB%20activities%202007%20(text%20only).pdf —Preceding unsigned comment added by Julmust (talkcontribs) 22:44, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Kopimi[edit]

Kompimi has been used so many times that I suggest an article. I feel that it shouldn't be just a redirect. 98.226.39.11 (talk) 13:16, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

I totally agree. It is used by many others today. --Julmust (talk) 22:45, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

Pronounciation[edit]

Is someone able and willing to produce an audio file demonstrating the correct pronounciation of Piratbyrån? Floker (talk) 16:44, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Done! Lokpest (talk) 20:02, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

the name[edit]

it's not just speculation that the name is a reference to antipiratbyrån, I have heard spokesmen explicitly say this. I wish I could provide a link, it's a youtube video somewhere. It's not really meant to be humerous though, they jus felt that antipiratbyrån needed a counterpart, so that their bullshit would not go unchallenged. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.11.196.206 (talkcontribs) at 01:37, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

How should we translate byrå? Currently it's translated as bureau in The Pirate Bereau but as agency in the Anti Pirate Agency. 83.249.82.33 (talk) 09:45, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
I would consider going for "office". Tomas e (talk) 11:31, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
"Bureau" is just perfect, and the translation always used by Piratbyrån themselves. --Julmust (talk) 22:46, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

Activities[edit]

I erased a very outdated description of activities, which included providing guides for file-sharing (something which is very far from Piratbyrån's role as of today) and arranging a yearly demonstration (which hasn't happened since 2007). Instead, I added a motivation from the jury of Prix Ars Electronica, which much better characterizes the kind of activities Piratbyrån involves in. --Julmust (talk) 22:48, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

Kopimi[edit]

I've revamped the paragraph about Kopimi. The previous version stated, or at least implied, that Kopimi is a copyright license. It isn't, it's a symbol. I have also added a subparagraph about Kopimism, a term which was derived from Kopimi. The text was a bit difficult to source, but I think it's very truthful.
