Revolts

[edit]

I'm not sure you can really use the inscriptions cited on (http://www.roman-emperors.org/probus.htm#N_17_) to demonstrate the extent of the revolts, since the erasure could have occurred after Carus' usurpation, which I think is more probable. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.233.216.16 (talk) 13:44, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Gothicus

[edit]

Why isn't he named Marcus Aurelius Probus Gothicus if he was awarded the title after defeating the Goths?

Good question. Sources (Wikipedia) claim that he was awarded that title in 277, even claiming that the title is attested on coins. However, other than his three predecessors and his successor, Probus never refered to a Gothic victory on his coins. He only refered to victories over the Germans. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.5.187.42 (talk) 09:41, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

other stuff

[edit]

There is some evidence, chiefly from coins, that Probus may have not been born at Sirmium but at Siscia instead. HA alleges "Probus oriundus e Pannonia, civitate Sirmiensi" but that is the only source for Sirmium as birthplace. Coins maybe suggesting an alternative -> SISCIA PROBI AVG (RIC 764-766) and ORIGINI AVG (Origins of the Emperor) (RIC 701-703). The latter especially suggests Siscia, as ORIGINI is an unique type struck only at that mint city, and exclusively for Probus.

Probus should also include the Abbot serving under Pope Gregory (c. 600) that established medical assistance in Jerusalem for the "Christian" pilgrims that traveled there. Stevenmitchell 00:56, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It might be worth looking at the following external link: http://www.roman-empire.net/decline/probus.html since it has quite a lot more detail than this article does.
