Ram Swarup's insight into the origin and popularity of the more fanatical and doctrinaire belief-based religions as being the result of a kind of yogic trance gone astray, is quite remarkable. It explains the unfortunate fact , why certain religions inspite of preaching violence and destruction, catch the fancy of millions of human beings.

Ram Swarup shows how the more pacifist religions like Buddhism and other Eastern traditions, stress the importance of each of us acquiring spiritual knowledge for ourselves and getting busy with ourselves, rather than merely believing some dogma and then "converting" others with mistaken zeal.

He looked forward to a new European renaissance of the rich Naturalistic and Pagan traditions of pre-Christian Europe. These ancient European traditions are closer to the profound Non-dual (Advaita) Schools of philosophy, which are the cornerstone of the Eastern wisdom traditions.

His work on "The Names of Gods: Divine Word as Revelation" and "A Hindu-Buddhist Rejoinder to the Pope's views on Yoga and the Eastern Religions" are seminal in their depth and perspicuity. Although the topics he chose to comment on are liable to rouse emotions, his works uniformly reflect a Gandhian gentleness and sensitivity characteristic of a philosopher who celebrates all that Man considers True, Sacred and Beautiful.
