Potato Eaters[edit]

Not an apposite example. The artist has used distortion and exaggeration. Realism eschews these.

I suspect 'realism' is a bit of a confusing term. Realism in the visual arts has two strands - 'subject' and 'technique', the former being the more important of the two, especially in 19th century art. The Potato Eaters can be described as a 'realist' painting because it depicts 'real' people in a completely unidealised and gritty manner. I understand the point that compared to the 'realist' art of the 20th century, especially Hyperrealism (painting), Van Gogh's overtly painterly and distorting technique appears a world away. However I do believe that in the context of 19th century 'realist' art it can be described as, at least, on the fringes of the latter genre, because of the subject of and emphasis in the piece. Indeed Van Gogh stated the realist art of Millet as being an inspiration for the piece. Dalisback1 (talk) 14:10, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Agree this refers more to a philosophy of art - painting 'real life' than depictions of photographic realism...Modernist (talk) 14:22, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Philosophy[edit]

Opening takes a particular very debatable philosophical position for granted. Should be redone to say that this is the philosophical underpinning of realism in art yet not give the impression that the independent existence of the (apparent) objects of the senses is uncontroversial. Fair use rationale for Image:Office in a small city hopper 1953.jpg[edit]

Image:Office in a small city hopper 1953.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
