Unsourced content[edit]

Hi,

I came across this article while answering this question posted at the Teahouse. I truly believe that editor Ndla was acting in good faith when they made [1],[2],[3], [4], [5], but being new to Wikipedia was not familiar with Wikipedia's policies on adding unsourced material. Ndla also mentions is one of the above edit sums that she is the daughter of Jencks which, if true, seems to be a declaration (unintentional perhaps) of a conflict of interest. Although persons may edit articles in which they have a COI per WP:COIADVICE, those are typically cases where none of the edits are deemed to be controversial. Unfortunately, I don't think that applies with respect to a few of these edits where some content was changed which had been cited by a reliable third-party source: the newspaper Marin Independent Journal. Now, it does appear that Ndlp tried to cite the information she added the tags <ref="Ndlp">, etc., but no further information was provided; therefore, it appears that this is nothing more than her own recollections of her father and her opinion as to what he would want his Wikipedia article to include. Unfortunately, this is all considered to be original research and thus not acceptable as a reliable source. I thought of just undoing all of the edits restoring the page back to the version verting the page back to version number 619349243 by Hjal, but decided to keep as much as I could. "Marin Independent Journal" citations[edit]

I realize that there are currently are only three sources cited in this article. Of course, more doesn't always mean better or make something more notable. The Marin Independent Journal article seems to be more than sufficient to establish Jencks notability. I am a little concerned, however, that the "MIJ" article may be being cited too much per WP:OVERCITE#Needless repetition. "WP:OVERCITE" is of course not policy so I realize others may disagree, but it does seem a bit unnecessary to cite the "MIJ" multiple times in the same section when a single citation at after the last sentence should more than do the trick. WP:CITEFOOT says

The citation should be added close to the material it supports, offering text–source integrity. If a word or phrase is particularly contentious, an inline citation may be added next to that word or phrase within the sentence, but it is usually sufficient to add the citation to the end of the sentence or paragraph, so long as it's clear which source supports which part of the text.

Personally, I don't think a lot of the information being cited in particularly contentious, so a loss of text-source integrity is not such a big issue. Moreover, removing some of these citations is not going to harm the article or make Jencks any less notable, but I think that it might just make the article a little bit easier to read. Personal life: Step-grandchildren[edit]

Hi,

I have removed information about Jencks' step-grandchildren added to the article with this this edit by his daughter editor Ndla. I believe this was truly a good faith attempt to improve the article, but none of the added information is mentioned in the Marin Independent Journal article which as being cited. There was also a technical problem with the way the information was added which caused "citation error" message.

I believe this removal is correct, but am very interested in hearing how other editors feel. The MIJ article does say that Jencks was survived by "two grandchildren", but it does not refer to them as "step-grandchildren". Would a change from "grandchildren" to "step-grandchildren" be considered something that is either "non-controversial" per WP:COIADVICE or a "serious error that needs to be corrected immediately" per WP:COS, i.e., acceptable for a COI editor to make? I'm not so sure because such an edit would essentially be claiming that the information in the MIJ article is incorrect, which may then lead to a questioning of its accuracy regarding other information as well, wouldn't it? Moreover, if the information about the step-grandchildren is added, then should a "citation needed" template be added to it. For example, would this be acceptable if the information is OK to add?

He and his wife, Mary, resided in Stinson Beach, California, for fifteen years before moving to nearby Mill Valley, California.^[1] Jencks died on June 30, 2014, at the age of 93. He was survived by his wife; two children, Michael Reynolds Jencks and Nancy de Laguna Jencks; four step-children - Lynn Christopher Collins, Martha M. Barrett, Elizabeth B. Snyder, and George B. Barrett III;^[1] and two step-grandchildren-Madeline Mary Patoir and Andrew Barrett Griffin.{{citation needed}}
