Sallustia Orbiana as Felix

[edit]

I'm not sure Lanciani's presentation of the Venus Felix statue as a portrait of Sallustia Orbiana can be trusted. The Pio-Clementino museum follows Wolfgang Helbig (Führer durch die öffentlichen Sammlungen der klassistischer Altertümer in Rom I, p.186), who states the portrait resembles that of Faustina the Younger and mentions "Sallustia and Helpidus" as dedicators, without any precision concerning Sallustia. fr:Gilbert Charles-Picard thinks it's a private funerary offering, without any imperial link ("La Vénus funéraire des Romains", Mélanges d'archéologie et d'histoire 56 (1939), p.130, n.1).
