I think this article could do with some more precise references for its information.

Isaiah reference a mistake

[edit]

I removed this reference from the article, as I think it is based on a misunderstanding:

Isaiah in the Septuagint (ISAIAH xlv. 16, 17. (Sept.)) also wrote
extensively on Scythianus and his disciple [1].

The extensive quote about Scythianus, which also forms the basis for the article Terebinthus, comes in fact from Saint Cyril of Jerusalem's Sixth Catechetical Lecture, which is where the Catholic Encyclopedia link leads at the end of the footnote.

As it happens, that lecture is headed with a short quote from Isaiah (45:16-17), as follows

 ISAIAH xlv. 16, 17. (Sept.)
Sanctify yourselves unto Me, O islands. Israel is saved by the Lord with an
everlasting salvation; they shall not be ashamed, neither shall they be
 confounded for ever, &c.

However this is just an encouraging biblical quote being used to preface Cyril's lecture. The rest of that page on the Catholic Encyclopedia contains Cyril's words, including the story of Scythianus.

Hippolytus

[edit]

Hippolytus' writings are hugely extensive. It would help to have a reference for his mention of Scythianus.

Epiphanius

[edit]

Ditto for Epiphanius.

Codex references

[edit]

Codex Reg. Alex. Vat. and Codex Casinensis -- it would be helpful to have links to these or references to enable them to be traced by an interested reader.

Indian travel

[edit]

It seems that I was misguided by this article that sources say that Scythianus travelled to India. I checked academic literature, and there's no mention of Scythianus visiting India. So I've corrected that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.52.53.107 (talk) 16:50, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't see an edit summary about this and thought you were reverting the date, so I reverted you. However, see [2]. I'll look for more later. Dougweller (talk) 17:23, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
