Article Cleanup
[edit]This article was in need of factual cleanup and grammatical/formatting improvement, and its External Links were almost all broken, outdated, or violated WP:FANSITE + WP:NOBLOGS. Opening up this talk page thread to WP:TALK#DISCUSS the changes I have made.
Outline:
- Corrected misinformation around "bangai (番外)" vs "bekkaku (別格)"
- Added verifiable information around gyaku-uchi (逆うち) pilgrimage, and removed a longstanding unsourceable claim
- Added important information about end-of-pilgrimage rites and certification (following the lead of the Camino de Santiago)
- Added important information about UNESCO World Heritage bid
- Fixed various wikification and grammar issues
On External Links cleanup:
Wikipedia is not a travel guide, and none of these links met WP:EL guidelines --
- 3/8 were broken/lack useful archival snapshots
- 1/8 promoted external media which are not particularly notable (arguably, 2/8; I do not know the pedigree of the documentary)
- 3/8 are blogs which violate WP:FANSITE WP:NOBLOGS
Instead, I've added two useful and official (notable) resources:
1) A rich and helpful pilgrimage pamphlet distributed by Japan's National Travel Organization
2) A link to The Shikoku Henro World Heritage Inscription Council Office DrArtLee (talk) 09:25, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
Move temple list into separate article
[edit]I think that the list of temples should be moved into its own article. I can also add the 20 bekkaku temples under a different section of that page.
On a separate note, I want to spend some time translating useful information from the Japanese pages. I found a source on the Japanese page for Dr. George Moreton, a Canadian professor at Tokushima Daigaku. Some of his papers may be useful. AdJHu • 胡安祝 19:08, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
- @DrArtLee and Maculosae tegmine lyncis: Do you have any objection to this?

- Hello, no particular objections from me (in general, looking in one place rather than two may be preferable, but if the freed up space in this pilgrimage article can be repurposed for its expansion, and the separate temples page fleshed out a bit (perhaps also with the "optional" okunoin or inner temple associated with each of the 88, and/or (other) bangai), then so much the better; thank you, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 03:25, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi there, apologies for the slow reply. There are also no objections from me -- this makes sense. DrArtLee (talk) 01:29, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
