Peter O'Higgins
[edit]User:K1ngstowngalway1 It seems to be well established that there were two Catholic martyrs named Peter O'Higgins and both were Dominicans. One was hanged in Dublin on 23 March 1642, the other was the prior of the Dominican Priory of Naas and seems also to have been hanged in 1642. the book by O'Reilly (1880) has separate sections for each of them. According to O'Reilly it was the prior whom Ormond tried to save and who was hanged on Coote's orders. There might be a confusion here. What do Corish & Millet (2005), who are cited by K1ngstowngalway1 precisely say? Curiously, the articles on Sir Charles Coote in the DIB (Armstrong, 2009) and the ODNB (Lenihan 2004) do not mention O'Higgins. I could not find Corish & Millet (2005) on the Internet. - Corish & Millet edited a book-length collection of scholarly articles by different authors on each of the 17 Irish Catholic Martyrs whom Pope John Paul II Beatified in 1992. As it is recent, compared with O'Reilly, I would expect it to only be available in print, rather than online, but if you can acquire it, it will point you to other important sources. Btw, it does identify Blessed Peter O'Higgins as the Dominican Prior of Naas, but it does also state that many other spellings of his name appear in the documents of the era.K1ngstowngalway1 (talk) 21:22, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
- Dear User:K1ngstowngalway1, thank you so much for your reply. I can't afford to buy books for my hobby. Do you own a copy of Corish & Millet? You cite a wide range (148–156) of pages. Could this be broken down? Can you please give the relevant passage(s), which support your text? Does the book support all your text or only part of it? Does it mention Coote? The DIB has an article "Peter Higgins" about the blessed prior (See). It says he died on 24 March 1642. Could you find the text of the beatification? How does it distinguish between the two Peter O'Higgins? Or is O'Reilly wrong and there was only one Peter Higgins? With many thanks and best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 15:01, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
- I do have a copy of Corish and Millet, yes, and Coote is cited repeatedly as the driving force behind the Prior's execution. I do intend to start an article on the Blessed Prior, as one is needed and will cite my sources using page numbers.K1ngstowngalway1 (talk) 18:33, 5 December 2023 (UTC)

Quality of article
[edit]More than half of this article consists of what purports to be a quotation from an enemy of Coote. Was this man ever in Ireland? We are not told. His sources appear to be second hand. If this were a supposed description of atrocities against protestants in 1641 it would at least be open to question! Here it forms the main substance of the article without comment. 92.5.125.50 (talk) 10:27, 24 June 2024 (UTC)
