Spelling of title
[edit]The title of the book is Smoky the Cowhorse, not Smoky the Cow Horse. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Collywolly (talk • contribs) 21:43, 15 January 2007 (UTC).
Movie
[edit]I read this Will James book as a small child in the 60's, and I remembered the title simply to be Smokey however I may have forgotten but being a horse lover I never forgot the story. I also watched the movie everytime it was aired starring Fess Parker and I loved it also. I think Disney made the movie based on the book but I am not 100% sure about it. But the book was a great read and I recommend it to all young horse lovers. To me it is the western or American version of Anna Suewels Black Beauty. Both were great books and both were great movies. Loved them. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.126.113.23 (talk) 01:37, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
MISC INFO
[edit]I own the color illustrated 1929 edition of this book. The outside cover only calls it "Smokey" and has a color illustration of a cowboy and a saddled horse standing next to what appears to be tall boulders. Inside the book, after the two page color scene and before the preface it is then called "Smokey the Cow Horse" (two words). However, immediately after the preface and after the explanation of the Illustrations it is again printed as just "Smokey" on page 1. The actual Chapter 1 begins on page 3. Facing page 4 is the first of thirteen illustrations with subtitles and descriptive text. It is quite confusing. There seems to be two pages missing between vi and ix; the book is held together there by glue and paper tape.
The list of reprints/republications dates as taken from the back of the first color illustration are as follows: Published in the USA in 1926 by Charles Scribner's Sons, copyright 1926, 1929. Reprinted September, October, twice in November, five times in December, 1926; February 1927; August 1927. Popular Edition published August 1927. Reprinted November 1927; January, June 1928. Library Edition published July 1928, Reprinted November 1928, January 1929. Illustrated Classics edition (color) October 1929. AlaskanAnthro (talk) 22:37, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
