I have removed the assertion that he wrote his own epitaph - d’Assonville, author of the citation concerned make no mention of the author of the epitaph - his exact text was "S.J. du Toit is bestempel as "die vader van die Afrikaanse taal"." followed by footnote where he clarified his source as "Die woorde op sy graf, Kleinbos, distrik Paarl" (pg 203) of the citation.
