Untitled[edit]

There is some discussion about the sentence:

However, the Russian alcohol limit was zero at the time. Months later, in July 2008, it was raised to 0.3 percent.[1]

While it is true the source is not directly relating to the incident in January 2008, it is relevant because it is countering the claims of British diplomats:

British diplomatic spokesmen confirmed that before driving, Kinnock, had a glass of wine, but that he was not drunk because it was less than allowed by Russian norms ..

So if the (neutral) info about the zero alcohol limit is removed, then the underlined statement should also be removed. I suggest they will both be allowed to stay – otherwise we would censor the incident which can't be the interest of Wikipedia.--Sasper (talk) 15:42, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It is a clear violation of WP:SYNTH to include a source unrelated to the topic of the article merely to contradict the claim made in the source. Excluding original research based on sources that do not discuss the topic of the article is not censorship. And it is also not a valid reason to remove cited material that is about the topic of the article.·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 15:46, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
More than about Kinnock, the incident is also relevant for the British Council, the British diplomacy per se and British-Russian relations, because both sides accused each other of violations during that time. So maybe some of this info should be moved to British Council and Russia–United Kingdom relations?--Sasper (talk) 15:50, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It seems reasonable to describe the incident in the article on Russian-British relations. It still doesn't seem reasnobale to use SYNTH to contradict Kinnock's claim. Find a published sources that does so or it will have to stay out.·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 15:54, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've mentioned this article at the BLPN notice board. It burden falls on the one who restores contested material to get consensus. So don't reinsert the material untill there is consensus to do so.·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 15:51, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you are correct (please allow me some time to check the Synth rules), then maybe the right solution will be to link to an article about Drunk driving in Russia and mention the actual alcohol limit in that article.--Sasper (talk) 15:56, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see how that would ameliorate the problem, it still induces the reader to make a conclusion that is not implied in the original source. Also note that he says "norms" not "laws" - which are of course not the same thing. You of course have all the time in the world to review policy.·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 16:06, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Please allow me to mention that I was about to undo my reinsertion again, because of your information that the burden falls on the one who restores the contested material. However, you came first. Had you mentioned this in the first place, there wouldn't be an edit war. Well, there is not now anyway, since I don't contest your removal in the light of that rule. --Sasper (talk) 16:02, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, no hard feelings. ·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 16:06, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Presumably because he's the son of a Baron. See The Hon (the UK and Commonwealth section). W. P. Uzer (talk) 16:19, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
