In the 19th Century a ship registered in Bombay, Calcutta, or other port within the area under the jurisdiction of of the British East India Company (EIC). Country ships could legally trade within the area east of the Cape of Good Hope, including China, but could not trade between the area east of the Cape and Britian without permission of the EIC.
