Is this the "correct name" in English?

[edit]

Is "Tavastia Proper" the name normally used in English for this subdivision of Finland?. To me it sounds like a typical "Mic invention" And, as I expected, this article was started in 2004 by User:Mic. He was very fond of creating his own latinized names. This one has survived over a decade. But it is really correct? --Vedum (talk) 12:28, 10 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that this is a questionable name for a current geographic entity, though justifiable in some historical contexts. Official Finnish sources now refer to it in English as "the Häme region" (the current 'maakunnat' are referred to as regions) which I think makes a lot more sense than to force a historical/anglicized/Latin/Swedish term onto it. Unfortunately the naming of these regions on Wikipedia, both current and historical, seems to be fairly inconsistent (Why use Tavastia Proper but also Uusimaa and Pirkanmaa? See also Häme_Province. And Finland Proper has been changed to the more recent term Southwest_Finland) "Tavastia" also seems to be widely spread across Wikipedia. This surely requires a broader conversation and organized approach, but where do we start? Cpastern (talk) 22:01, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

– The current English article names for these Finnish regions seem to have been invented for Wikipedia when these articles were created in 2004 (by the same user), and the names are not supported by the references of the articles, nor are they used by reliable English-language sources. The new suggested names are the official English names as published by the Finnish government [1] and used by e.g. Statistics Finland [2], and all of the 15 other Finnish regions already use the official names in English Wikipedia. Names of the Finnish regions are generally not very notable internationally, and e.g. Encyclopedia Britannica does not include them, so the official names seem to be the best option, certainly better than Wikipedia-invented ones. Google search results for the current article names contain mostly content that seems sourced from Wikipedia itself. I was not able to find any original references to the current article names that predate the Wikipedia articles themselves. Anssi~enwiki (talk) 03:05, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
