I think it might be a good idea to cite which translation is used for the quote in the beginning, since I've noticed that different authors sometimes prefer to use/avoid different words when writing inexact translations. This would help maintain consistency for anyone who has read several translations.--Tonberry King 05:24, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Revision

[edit]

Since the original version of this article was unfortunately based on Mitchell's "patience" translation, I've done a major revision. If anyone is interested, please add more translations to the table.

Shouldn't be discussed

[edit]

This should not be discussed as it is sacred and can only be when in a Taoist temple with certain requirements. All are welcome to find this knowledge, simply visit a Taoist temple and ask the people there. Tkms Dailly Rubbings 12:59, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

Mitchell

[edit]

I received an email from Nemome suggesting to "forget Mitchell" and the previous edit noted "changed order of Mitchell's 3 treasures - Mitchell doesn't transliterate, so the order he places in English is not the same as their order in the original chinese." It's more accurate to say Mitchell doesn't translate, so I'll delete his interpretation from the table. Keahapana 00:13, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, 2007. I've re-removed the Mitchell reference in the article because Mitchell famously does not know any Chinese, did not translate any Chinese terms, and only interpreted other people's translations (see here: http://scott.london/interviews/mitchell.html). Mitchell is very popular, but the relevant section is for "translations", and a creative interpretation by a poet who knows no Chinese is not reliable or even a translation at all. My wikipedia skills are garbage, but I highly recommend replacing it with Ames' and Hall's translation, due to the fact that it is much more reliable as a source of Sinology, and the fact that the goal of the translation was philosophical fidelity, including in the commentary, at the expense of being atrocious to read for pleasure. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheGreatConsultingDetective (talkcontribs) 04:16, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject class rating

This article was automatically assessed because at least one WikiProject had rated the article as start, and the rating on other projects was brought up to start class. BetacommandBot 04:30, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reference citation format

[edit]

Hi Cybercobra, thanks for your good job cleaning up the table. However, you've also started changing the reference format from existing inline parenthetical to footnote, resulting in a jumble of both systems. I'm familiar with the arguments for and against the different referencing systems, and understand that everyone has their personal preferences. WP:CITECONSENSUS advises, "Because templates can be contentious, editors should not change an article with a distinctive citation format to another without gaining consensus. Where no agreement can be reached, defer to the style used by the first major contributor." I suggest we revert to the existing Harvard style referencing. What do you think? The table is very useful

[edit]

The table is very very good and helpful, since no one cares to say 'thanks' nowadays I say thank you Cybercobra.
