This list is inaccurate

- Most of the page includes more battles and expeditions than actual wars. You have to know that a battle is not a war. Neither is an expedition - A lot of these wars are not US wars. Most of the data shown here is taken from the articles List of wars 1500–1799, List of wars 1800–1899, List of wars 1900–1944, List of wars 1945–1989, List of wars 1990–2002, List of wars 2003–current. I got the information about winners and losers from the above sites. I think this graphical view shows a different picture than just a list. Corrections are always appreciated. List

I see a few candidates for wars that should be removed: French Intervention in Mexico, Greek Civil War, South African Border War, Angolan Civil War. The US government may have been an interested party in these conflicts, and may have provided material support to one side, but that seems to be far short of "the United States at War". Was any US military personnel actively involved in these conflicts? Why are these included, but something like the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993 left out? If the list is going to be so expansive in defining the "United States at war", then it should include events like the Walker Expedition and the Abraham Lincoln Brigade.

Listing the full dates of conflicts such as World Wars I and II also seems to obscure the actual dates of the United States at war (1917-1918 and 1941-1945 respectively).

Also, the US didn't lose the War of 1812. It was a draw (arguably a win for Canada, but that's another story).

My advice would be to harmonise this list with the Timeline of United States military operations. The only problem with this exhaustive list is that there are a lot of events involving sailors from one particular ship trashing some foreign port or island over a perceived insult to America's honor. 209.235.2.8 (talk) 14:53, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

This article is beyond a mess

I have this article on my watchlist for a long time now and there seems to be no consistency. People constantly change dates and results without as much as a motivation in the edit summary or a source. I also have no idea what exactly what counts as a war or not according to this article. There's even hidden text in the article that says "I don't know what this does" or something similar. Anyone have an idea to fix this.★Trekker (talk) 07:38, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

Based upon the previous discussions, and given that 3 other similar articles exist (Timeline of United States military operations, List of wars involving the United States, and List of the lengths of United States participation in wars), I've been bold and have redirect this page to List of wars involving the United States. There's no other timeline, this has been the only one. Not perfect, as the previous disussions show. But this can be fixed, with clear definitions abot what's a war and what shouldn't be included in the timelines. Battles and expedtions are no wars as well as conflicts without official government and direct military involment.
My suggestion is to improve the timeline(s) and remove the page redirect afterwards. --Angerdan (talk) 21:04, 12 February 2018 (UTC)
