Scope and sources[edit]

Please note that despite its initial state, this article is about the law as a whole, not just the controversy over its recent revision. This reflects the coverage on ja.wiki and IMO is more appropriate for an encyclopedia article. That said, the article is in desperate need of editing by someone who understands Japanese law and can help rectify its many omissions.

Its English-language sources also need expansion - it currently relies much too heavily on ANN. Although blogs in general aren't considered reliable, I've referenced Dan Kanemitsu because he's a respected translator and despite his obvious POV he links to many reliable Japanese sources. Title[edit]

Yep, that's the literal title of the Ordinance that the 2010 bill revises:

Tōkyō-to (東京都) Tokyo Metropolitan (Area)
Seishōnen no Kenzen na Ikusei (青少年の健全な育成) healthy development of youth(s)
ni Kansuru (に関する) ...regarding / concerning
Jōrei (条例) local ordinance

The romaji is from the furigana on ja.wikipedia and I've used the English translation given by Kanemitsu since he does this stuff for a living. Personally I think "concerning" sounds less stilted than "regarding", and I wonder if "youth" as a collective noun would be better than the plural "youths", but in the absence of an official English translation Kanemitsu was the most authoritative source I could find. However, I do agree that it's a very clumsy title even if it's formally correct. I've added lots of redirects from shorter English terms (especially ones that have been used in the media), but I'm sure there are plausible ones I've overlooked. Mechanics of regulation[edit]

This article does not currently explain how self-regulation works or what happens to material that is "considered harmful". I think it would be helpful to have a short summary (a few sentences) on at least the "restricted" labeling and how R-18 works are handled by retailers. I could try to put something together, but as I do not speak Japanese nor reside in Japan, I would prefer it if someone who is more familiar with the effects of the regulations could address them. - JRBrown (talk) 20:16, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
