I just ran across Lahiff as being owner of The Tavern in Manhattan in the book A Gaudy Spree by Samual Marx. Lahoff's is almost certainly a mis-spelling.--Jrm2007 (talk) 09:25, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In not only Marx but also a Damon Runyon book, I see the place referred to, in writing, as Lahiffs. Maybe you heard the name as Lahist, but you should try to find something where you can see the spelling--Jrm2007 (talk) 17:03, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

style and tone[edit]

I've rewritten the article to make it more formal and less POV, but, I hope, without sacrificing the colorfulness of the subject matter. Thus I have left in such un-PC phrases as "booze and broads" by trying to place them in appropriate context.

Unwritten "code" [edit]

The article reads: Celebrity alone was not enough to receive first-class service in Shor's restaurant. According to David Halberstam in his book The Summer of '49, guests had to observe the unwritten "code" which prevailed in Shor's establishment. Charlie Chaplin, who was not privy to that code, was made to wait in line.

But nothing more is said of this unwritten "code" . An encyclopedia article is not supposed to be a puzzle to solve. I suggest that if anyone knows what this unwritten "code" was, that it be explained; if not, any reference to it should be deleted.Daqu 19:32, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sixteen years later and I have the exact same question. I've added a clarification needed template in the article. If literally no one knows today what the code was, only that there was one, then that could be included as part of the statement in the article about the code.
