[edit]This injury almost stopped him playing in the 1970 World Cup (this: retinal detachment). Why Tostao still scored 2 goals in this tournament? 210.86.225.146 (talk) 10:12, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
- According to his autobiography, he got this injury in the year previous to the World Cup. The injury was bad enough he had to go into surgery. He then worked hard to get his full recovery in time in order to attend the tournament, what he did successfully. So he did attend the WC and helped Brazil by scoring twice against Peru in the quarterfinals and by assisting his teammates to score other goals. He later gave his WC golden medal to the physician who made the surgery in his eye. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.78.30.71 (talk) 13:41, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
In order to adjust to the high altitude in Mexico City, the Brazilian team moved their camp to Bogota (Colombia - 2600 masl) before the 1970 World Cup. In one of the pre-world cup games against local teams, they played Club Los Millonarios from Bogota and Tostao was intentionally buttheaded by Oscar Villano (argentinian defender well known by his rudeness), and as a result of this action , he suffered retina detachment. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 158.35.225.228 (talk) 20:20, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
