Performing Arts

[edit]

UClan offers an excellent Acting degree course that's quickly emerging as one of the premiere training centres in the north. Actors coming out of the programme are finding success in the business, and the training scheme itself is innovative and maintained by excellent industry professionals. Highlighting it would help raise its profile further. Would it be acceptable to give it its own commendation? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.31.102.251 (talk) 16:33, 4 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have a reliable secondary source for it? See WP:Citing sources. Otherwise it would be using Wikipedia for advertising and promotion which is certainly not allowed.--Charles (talk) 16:54, 4 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

University ratings

[edit]

(I'm posting this to all articles on UK universities as so far discussion hasn't really taken off on Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities.)

There needs to be a broader convention about which university rankings to include in articles. Currently it seems most pages are listing primarily those that show the institution at its best (or worst in a few cases). See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Universities#University ratings. I have removed the section on Student Liaison Officers on these grounds: (1) Wikipedia isn't the place for student representatives to introduce themselves to the students, (2) it is directed specifically at and only of interest to students of Durham University, (3) the information is liable to date rapidly or is already out of date, (4) overly chatty style "Hi! I'm Fred Smith and I'm your SLO!!!!" which also violates the NPOV criterion, and (5) parts of the section have been vandalised and reduced to gibberish. mallardview

BSc in homeopathy

[edit]

According to "Bad Science" (Goldacre 2008) UCLAN offers bachelor of science degrees in alternative medicine- Since this is quite a controversial topic seen by some as the legitimisation of pseudoscience I feel it should be included. If there are no objections I will contribute a short paragraph.88.106.115.82 (talk) 01:32, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Date discrepancy for name change

[edit]

In the introduction, it states "the university had been Preston Polytechnic since 1 September 1973"; whereas under the History heading it states "In 1970 this became Preston Polytechnic". Can anybody resolve this (with reference of course) please? Redrose64 (talk) 07:13, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The 1970 has been amended to 1973 (with ref); the 1 September 1973 has become simply 1973. Both edits done by Mholland - hopefully somebody can find something with the actual date in 1973 --Redrose64 (talk) 21:23, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Data Discrepancy

[edit]

This page states that it is the fifth largest in terms of students, manchester metropolitan's page sayd the same and here on wikipedia is a page about uni sizes and there is a fairley large difference.

Whats going on?--79.77.104.129 (talk) 18:56, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lies, damn lies, and statistics (but gentle spin rather than lies). The size of a university's student body depends on what you're counting. The wikipedia page on UK universities by size lists F.E university students as well as H.E students(reflecting its source), and produces a very different figure than you would get from just undergraduates. I would imagine that it also depends how you count part-time students and postgraduates. Does a university with 100 full-time and 150 part-time students have 250 students (by simple head count) or 175 (by full-time equivalent)? There are also the universities of London and Wales. You could add all their students together and regard them as mega-universities, or you could look at each college as an entirely separate body. It's the way that the student numbers are counted that creates the inconsistencies.ThomasL (talk) 23:01, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Where does the figure 34,863 arise from? Can't find reference to it anywhere. Shouldn't we be using the HESA figure? —Preceding unsigned comment added by PhilHaggis (talkcontribs) 21:44, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

For consistency's sake and because I've seen no other data from a WP:RELIABLE source, I've gone with the data at List of UK universities by size. I have linked both directly to the HESA data and to the aforementioned list page since there is a potentially greater likelihood of that list being regularly updated than the page for UCLan. Article resembles a Brochure?

[edit]

I venture that the style of this article at times resembles a promotional brochure or even, I dare say, a puff piece - and as to whether facilities are "well equipped" or not, surely that is POV, some parts sound like they are lifted straight from the prospectuses?

Is it reasonable to limit enthusiasms or 'gee whizz' writing from entries here? That's why I'm puzzled over my -81.

By the way, the tilde signing thing isn't working. Radiojonty. User:Radiojonty (talkcontribs) 17:46, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Those parts which appear to be lifted straight from a prospectus ought to have a WP:THIRDPARTY reference as well or should be removed. Longwayround (talk) 17:33, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dubious

[edit]

The article states that 53 Degrees 'often hosts top bands'. Much as I personally might enjoy or otherwise the bands that play at the venue, I cannot think of any band that has played there since it opened which could be described as a top band. History

[edit]

I researched the former names of ULC many years ago and have this list, starting in 1849: Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge (note no 'Useful'), Avenham Institute, Harris Institute, Harris College, Preston Polytechnic, Lancashire Polytechnic, University of Central Lancashire. Unfortunately I think I can't cite the T-Shirts I had printed in 1994 as a serious source. MichaelNNNNN (talk) 12:04, 15 November 2016 (UTC)MichaelNNNNN 15Nov16[reply]

Proposed merge with UCLan Cyprus

[edit]

content is minimal and can easily be incorporated into the main article Theroadislong (talk) 14:28, 12 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I prefer my article not to be merged. Iiwannou (talk) 14:45, 12 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Iiwannou: It isn't 'your' article. See WP:OWNERSHIP. Why do you think it should not be merged? Please respond properly to my message to you here about your relationship with the university. Curb Safe Charmer (talk) 14:49, 12 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
