is it necessary to have the information about australia and usa-canada? Especially considering the scentences are longer than the ones reffering to uruguay.

Uruguay and its 4 world championships?

[edit]

Should it be mentioned in this article that Uruguay are 4 x world champions, or atleast a footnote? Here are uploaded links from FIFA documents stating that the 1924, and 1928 Olympics games (organized by FIFA) are equivalents to the 1930 World Cup. (Stated in 1914 before the 24, 28 Olympics, in 1930, 1950 and then 1978).

First match

[edit]

The infobox lists Urugay's first match as being in 1901, but [RSSSF's list of Uruguay internationals contradicts this. Oldelpaso 09:56, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Uruguay played their first game the 16th may, 1901 against Argentina XI. The game was the first game outside of the british islands and was organised by Albion FC. There should be a foot note that FIFA does not count the game as a full "A" international. The correct date should be 20 july, 1902. Read the section Uruguay-Argentina at IFFHS.de.

Little information...

[edit]

It is really incredible how little information available there is on the net. The most complete of the wikipedia's articles are the German and Italian version, but only because they describe each World Cup, and extend on the first decades of the 20th century. The Italian version has a couple of unsourced anegdotes, such as the financing their own trip to Paris in 1924. Mariano(t/c) 12:36, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

The current logo is innacurate. Uruguay has four stars above the badge, not two. You can verify this at FIFA's and AUF's websites.

You are right. Unluckily, there's no other image of the logo we could use. I'll try to get one. --Mariano(t/c) 12:29, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kits

[edit]

Im going to change the home kits. The home shirt from light blue to dark blue. They used that kit this Copa america.

most succesful ????

[edit]

"most succesful team", what a pathetic lie! the fact of having a player such as octavio darío is less embarrasing than playing as fiji or the sisley tank do. perhaps uruguayan people are expecting the return of the magnanimus darío silva (a human being with total acknowledgement of lexis - you know the olimarenic guy-). well, legs do not grow (heureusement quelques-unes dirent), and paste base [beis] is really noxious (though some may mistake it for frola paste - let's say the aguirregaray basque).

well I tried to wipe off that bullshit but a minnessotan wikipedian button [botonazo wikipedístico de minnesota] reverted it.

now they're shitted in their pants thinking of bielsa the gyte.

(the article is poorly written, worthy of a C in a first certificate; congrats cocky uruguayan) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.235.7.36 (talk) 04:43, 20 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Proud Celeste REP: we 4th place winners salute your effort frustrated argentinean or brazilian/australian/english/french/italian or whatever fiasco name national team at this years world cup. The Sisley tank is in first place of the first division as of august 29 2010,Octavio Darío won 4 uruguayan championships and his 2002 world cup goal entered the top 10,and the mighty olimar's gaucho knife Darío Silva will be olympian soon, all achievements you could only dream about,as you could only make out (fags) in your dreams.

The articles on WP are ment to be written with an objective mind, but saying that Uruguay is one of the most successful teams in the world is not a complete lie. Argentina and Uruguay are the teams with most international titles (19). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.100.172.195 (talk) 13:06, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

4 time world champions

[edit]

Hi guys. You should put that the 1924, 1928 Olympics were organized by FIFA, and were officially considered the first 2 world championships. The "4 star status" was agreed by FIFA years later. I actually have the real FIFA document , which i can upload, to prove it. Uruguay is a 4 time world champion —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.100.181.62 (talk) 20:23, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Have you uploaded the document on Wikipedia? I can't find it and I'm currently working the article on swedish Wikipedia. I want to paste it on the article and tell why Uruguay has a "4 star status". // MDBR @ Swedish wiki —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.100.172.195 (talk) 20:42, 5 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Minor tournaments

[edit]

I checked the Rous Cup and there wasn't even a 1990 edition! The Rous Cup was only held from 1985 to 1989 and Uruguay has never participated in any of them. It should be removed from the list. Also, for the other tournaments in this section that Uruguay has joined, if there is no link to an article that states that Uruguay has joined that tournament, then it should probably be referenced. Official matches section

[edit]

The head to head stats on this section are different from the ones on the Fifa.com, examples: Argentina on the article 182 games played, 58 wins, 41 draws, 83 loses, 221 goals for, 289 goals against, Argentina on FIFA.com 177 games played, 54 wins, 40 draws, 83 loses, 213 goals for, 286 goals against, Chile on the article 72 games played, 42 wins, 16 draws, 14 loses, 127 goals for, 71 goals against, Chile on Fifa.com 71 games played, 40 wins, 17 draws, 14 loses, 126 goals for, 72 goals against, Brazil on the article 71 games played, 21 wins, 19 draws, 31 loses, 91 goals for, 122 goals against, Brazil on Fifa.com 70 games played, 19 wins, 19 draws, 32 loses, 90 goals for, 125 against, that's three different examples and not even one is right, either the stats on the section are wrong or Fifa is wrong, more likely than not the section stats are wrong. --Bocafan76 (talk) 06:25, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Stadium

[edit]

Who said that the Centenario had, when it was built, a capacity of 100,000?? Now a day, it's got a capacity of 60 thousands, how it's posible to have more capacity 80 years ago? And, how is that Crowds for Uruguay's home matches vary greatly depending on the importance of the match and the quality of the opposition.... That isn't true, the Centenario is always full of people when the nationat team plays here.
Can someone fix that? 'cause I know some English but not to much. --Vought.bolso (talk) 04:10, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The change in capacity is probably because safety restrictions are more strict now than at times in the past. Oldelpaso (talk) 11:58, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Centenario Stadium had never had a capacity of 100,000, I'm sure about that, because It was smaller than now. --Vought.bolso (talk) 05:32, 22 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've checked with some of the references I used when writing 1930 FIFA World Cup, which indicate it was 90,000 (The crowd for the 1930 final is generally reported as 93,000). I also changed it to "first fully opened" as early in the tournament only 3 sides were open according to Cris Freddi's Complete Book of the World Cup. Oldelpaso (talk) 14:35, 23 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Article Length

[edit]

For quite some time now a box has appeared at the top of this page saying that the article is too long to read comfortably. I agree with this and I believe that some information needs to be either removed or moved to a separate page. My suggestion is to trim the results section. The boxes containing Uruguay's performances at the Olympic Games, World Cup, Pan-American Games should definitely stay, but I believe the FIFA Confederations Cup and the Minor Tournaments charts need to go to another page. The South American Championships and Copa America tables are debatable, I can appreciate why some people might want to remove them and others keep them on the main page. But I do believe that trimming the results section is the best place to start trimming this article to a more readable length.--SargentIV (talk) 15:41, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This articles has too-too many statistics included. Maybe the most for NT-s in Wikipedia. But basically "history" section is too short. If someone wants to improve this article then should think about it. Pelmeen10 (talk) 23:55, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

About the "Current team status" section: I think it is wierd idea to format the section like it is currently. Pelmeen10 (talk) 23:57, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Error on Olympic Record

[edit]

Currently it says Uruguay did not qualify to all Olympic football tournaments between 1936-2008, however, Uruguay qualified for three tournaments that I know of, Berlin 1936, Montreal 1976 and Los Angeles 1984, but withdrew from all three for various reasons (the most common cited is economic problems, however I have also heard and read versions of sporting and political reasons for not taking part in the tournaments). I would like the Olympic Record to be amended to say Withdrew or Declined to Participate or something else appropriate.

Qualification for Berlin 1936: http://www.rsssf.com/tables/35safull.html

Qualification for Montreal 1976: http://www.rsssf.com/tableso/ol1976q.html#SAmerica

I'm still looking for info of Los Angeles 1984, but I've been told Uruguay qualified for the Olympic tournament as Panamerican champions. Would newspaper articles count?

1958 World Cup qualification

[edit]

I have read in a Swedish book from 1958, that when an extra playoff had to be made for Israel, the following happened: Belgium and Uruguay told they weren't interested (my translation) and Wales won the chance of qualification. Today FIFA only states that Belgium declined the extra qualification. Does anyone know of any other source on Uruguay's standpoint in 1958? Fomalhaut76 (talk) 11:12, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Are the 4 stars really recognized by FIFA?

[edit]

The official FIFA equipment regulations clearly says;

"Member Associations whose first men’s or women’s representative teams have won one or more of the previous editions of the FIFA World Cup™, the FIFA Women’s World Cup™, the FIFA Futsal World Cup or the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup may display on the Playing Equipment items..."

Yes, the Olympic football tournament of 1924 and 1928 are recognized as FIFA tournaments, as you can see on the Uruguayan association site on the FIFA website, but so is also the olympic football tournament of 1920 which Belgium won, and they don't have a star above their badge.

Is there any official source for an official recognition by FIFA?

NOT 4 time winners of the World cup

[edit]

Please stop claiming this, it is embarrassing. The Olympic wins were a great success, but no-one considers them World cup wins. Minor competitions

[edit]

Hello all, I am planning on adding a Minor Competitions section to the competitive record. This is mainly as it has been decided that my recent addition of the CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions to all former participants does not warrant a full section and table unless a nation has competed in more than one edition (see this discussion). Before I do this, I was wondering if anybody would be able to provide me with any minor tournaments that Uruguay has participated in, e.g. one-off or one match tournaments. It would be really helpful if anybody knows of any. Thank you! Vesuvio14 (talk) 12:32, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Medal Record

[edit]

Uruguay has won more than just two Olympic Medals. Should their other accomplishments, namely winning the Fifa World Cup twice, and the Copa Amercia 15 times be mentioned? KevinBian1 (talk) 02:49, 10 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

FIFA doesnt recognize Uruguay to have 4 world championships

[edit]

In the list of world cups at the official fifa.com , FIFA doesnt list 1924 and 1928 as world cups https://www.fifa.com/tournaments/mens/worldcup . Also the official FIFA website refers to the 1924 olympic football tournament as "olympic football tournament" and not as "world championship" or "world cup" https://www.fifa.com/tournaments/mens/worldcup/1930uruguay . Finally, a record of an uruguayan newspaper (Pais) isnt a valid source of official FIFA information about what FIFA recognizes or not. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.2.121.77 (talk) 12:57, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's of course ridiculous and a reason why Wikipedia cannot be regarded as a useful source as long as any ignorant can write whatever he or she wants.
The first World Cup was held in Uruguay, in honour of their 2 preceding victories at the Olympics. How can one be world champion before the first world cup has actually taken place? How can you retroactively, even decades later, decide that some team's success at the Olympics shall be regarded as a something totally different?
Uruguay are two-time world champions. End of the story. Write whatever you like, it won't make it any truer. perelly (talk) 13:44, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
