Nationality
[edit]There appears to be an edit war forming over his nationality, so in the meantime I've removed all mentions of his nationality. Hopefully this can be sorted out by finding a suitable reliable source (and not a WP:SPS). Mlm42 (talk) 17:21, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
- I agree, that is a suitable solution for all until we find a RS that specifically mentions their ethnicity/nationality. One user was removing mentions to this article's Ukrainian ethnicity, I'm pretty sure that he was disputing his Ukrainian nationality (as he says, Ukraine did not exist at that time--true, but doesn't mean he is not an ethnic Ukrainian with Soviet nationality). This might actually be a problem with a lot of categories because they may mislead someone to think that xyz was a Ukrainian / Soviet nationality cosmonaut (warranting inclusion in Category:Ukrainian Soviet cosmonauts) when indeed they were only Soviet nationals of Ukrainian ethnicity (Ukraine was not independent until 1991) -- categories are pretty ambiguous when it comes to this.. --dsergienko (talk) 17:29, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, categories often escape references.. you can't add a "citation needed" tag to them, unfortunately! :) Mlm42 (talk) 17:32, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
- However, according to WP:EGRS "General categorization by ethnicity, gender, religion, or sexuality is permitted, with the following considerations... Inclusion must be justifiable by external references." While his ethnicity can be questioned, his nationality when he became notable was undoubtedly that of USSR. "Soviet" must be in the opening paragraph by all means per WP:MOSBIO, because USSR was the country of which he "was a citizen when the person became notable". --Garik 11 (talk) 10:20, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

- Makes sense to me.. but I'd still like to see better sources. Mlm42 (talk) 05:04, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
