Explanation needed[edit]

It would be really great if this page would explain if X Windows system allows for a X application to show up on the Mac desktop just like any other "native" application. Or, is this a septate desktop? What I am getting at is, how does this work from the users perspective? Dfeig 18:35, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

X11.app required[edit]

Certain applications require X11.app (or other X Window compatibility) to run on Mac OS X. Some examples include:

Possssssssssssssibly. OTOH, the next version of GTK+ will apparently be Quartz-native, meaning OOo and Gimp won't need X11. (The Quartz code is alpha-to-early-beta at present, meaning apps using it will sometimes actually start before crashing ;-) - David Gerard 13:50, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The support for windowing systems such as X11, Wayland or Quartz (see article display server), is usually included in the toolkit: GTK+, Qt, wxWidgets, GNUstep, etc. Programs written with GTK+2/Qt3 will require XQuartz or an equivalent program to run on OS X, if the support for Quartz has only been added to GTK+3/Qt 4. X.org?[edit]

The general trend for other distros is to move away from XFree86 towards X.org, mostly because that is where all the active extension development is occurring. What are Apple's future plans for X11.app? --IanOsgood 03:18, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

XQuartz/etc, has had its own mailing list for several years, and is, for example, no more "led" by X.Org than Cygwin or the various Linux- and BSD-ports. TEDickey (talk) 23:36, 14 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Name change[edit]

I disagree with the articles current title. Putting .app at the end of the application's title usually leads to a redirect to application name (application) or application name (software) (for example Safari.app or Address Book.app), therefore I say the article should be moved to X11 (application) or X11 (software).

  • Weak support. I'm not a Mac user, but my sister is. Despite this, I know a lot more about UNIX-compatible systems than she does. So therefore, I don't know which term is actually preferred in the Mac user community, but if the official name is now XQuartz, then that's what I think the article should be named after. XQuartz is open source not an Apple exclusive program[edit]

"XQuartz is an open-source effort to develop a version of the X.Org X Window System that runs on OS X" While it is true Apple provides the old X11 code technically Xquartz has grown past that and can be considered its own thing--174.99.238.22 (talk) 17:10, 27 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

no 64-bit executable available[edit]

A recent edit asserts that no 64-bit executable is available for XQuartz. However, the file program says something different:

Given that I just punched a card on x026 on my Catalina machine (and, no, it wasn't modified to use native Quartz), any source claiming XQuartz doesn't work on Catalina is rather unreliable. Guy Harris (talk) 20:37, 29 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
