Francis Joseph Bigger

[edit]

Created/expanded by Uncle G (talk). Nominated by Drmies (talk) at 22:16, 9 June 2019 (UTC).

  • Mandarax, I am more or less used to including such dates, because I believe they provide context. If you like it better without, go for it: I trust your judgment. Drmies (talk) 02:15, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
  • Doesn't matter to me. My personal preference doesn't override yours. I trust your judgement more than my own, except, of course, in the preferred spelling of "judgement". MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 02:33, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
General: Article is new enough and long enough

Policy compliance:

Hook eligibility:

  • Cited: Yes
  • Interesting: Yes
  • Other problems: No - Well, OK. But I wonder if there are any other interesting hooks that can be created from the article. It seems like Bigger was quite an interesting fella. For instance, I liked this factoid: His interest in archeology remained noted by archeologists a century later, with sites that he had dug being known informally as "well and truly Biggered"
QPQ: Done.

Overall: epicgenius (talk) 00:13, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

  • Epicgenius, thanks--the YMD format, I think Uncle G chose that because it is a very acceptable way of doing things in Europe. As for the hook, I don't know. I think the "Biggered" thing is funny but somewhat minimal; I wrote the hook the way I did because it allowed to give more wikilinked context. But I'm open to suggestions. Drmies (talk) 21:45, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
    • The "well and truly" one is understandably tempting, although I would not go with it myself, for much the same reasons. There are a lot of others. Let me know if any of these interest you, so that I can write them up, because there is so much available that is not even in the article, yet. Uncle G (talk) 21:51, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
      • ALT2 ... that Francis Joseph Bigger made subtle alterations to Lyttle's Betsy Gray that are now the authoritative version of its text? (Beiner 2018, pp. 326–327)
      • ALT3 ... that Francis Joseph Bigger fought, and won, an argument with William Thomas Latimer in the pages of Irish Book Lover? (Beiner 2018, pp. 334) Latimer has an entry in the DUB. Irish Book Lover is in encyclopaedias and history books.
      • ALT4 ... that in addition to 267 journal articles listed in his own name at the NLI, Francis Joseph Bigger wrote pseudonymously as ENREI? (Beiner 2018, pp. 324, 365)
      • ALT5 ... that the bones reinterred by Francis Joseph Bigger in Henry Joy McCracken's grave are doubted to actually be McCracken? (Beiner 2018, pp. 434)
        • @Uncle G: Sorry for taking so long. I like your first and second alternate versions much better, so let's go with either one of these. I personally prefer the first alternate, though. epicgenius (talk) 17:27, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
  • @Epicgenius: Coming to promote this, I cannot find the hook facts for either of the two hooks you seem to have approved in the article. The "well and truly Biggered" quote is much more hooky. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:43, 2 August 2019 (UTC)
    • Cwmhiraeth, i seem to have missed that - let's go with the "Biggered" hook instead. epicgenius (talk) 13:09, 2 August 2019 (UTC)
@Epicgenius: How about ALT6? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 17:54, 2 August 2019 (UTC)
  • ALT6 ... that a century after Irish antiquarian Francis Joseph Bigger had revived the Ulster Journal of Archaeology, sites he had dug were still being referred to as "well and truly Biggered"?
@Epicgenius: Can you give it a formal tick then so that it can be promoted? Thanks. (I have renumbered the hooks) Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:11, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
