Perhaps — ALT1: ... that Grand Quartier Général was the French Army's headquarters throughout World War I? Simpler and more basic, but probably more interesting. Nyttend (talk) 05:46, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, have been busy the last few days and not able to edit here. How about:

ALT2: ... that staff officers with the French Army general headquarters during the First World War have been described as "perennial optimists"? - Dumelow (talk) 07:49, 2 February 2013 (UTC)
ALT3: ... that some of the secret records of the French Army general headquarters in World War One were captured by Germany during World War Two and kept by the USSR until the 1990s?
ALT4: ... that the French Army general headquarters during the First World War lacked an effective means of casualty estimation and simply assumed that three German soldiers were killed for every two French soldiers?
