Landing of the first Filipinos

  • Comment: Article was created new, from work done outside of the mainspace, on 28 September. Subject is notable per WP:LASTING and WP:GEOSCOPE, as it was a significant first within the History of Filipino Americans hearkening the emigration of Filipinos to what is now the modern boundries of the United States. Article is made up of over nine thousand characters (including spaces) which are spread over one thousand words. Initial hooks provided, are all from facts that are utilized in the article, and are sourced with inline citations from sources. All content in the article has been verified to a source (some sentences are not cited specifically, as they are verified by the next used inline source). The Earwig tool found that 16% was the closest match, mostly consisting of pronoun usage. Article was written as neutrally as possible. I have more than 5 DYK credits, thus must meet QPQ, and have already reviewed another earlier nomination. All hooks are under 200 characters (I think, I maybe wrong). The hooks do not focus negatively on any living individual, as the event occurred multiple centuries ago. The image proposed is largely for use with ALT3. It was taken by myself in 2016 at the monument, and is in use in the article's infobox. This article was written, and nominated, due to the upcoming Filipino American History Month, and the subject of the article's upcoming 431st anniversary; therefore it is my request that this nomination be reviewed and passed ASAP, so this nomination can be on the main page for the event's 431st anniversary (18 October) during Filipino American History Month. Its creation was suggested here.

Created/expanded by RightCowLeftCoast (talk). Self-nominated at 04:04, 29 September 2018 (UTC).

  • You should lowercase "Landing" in all the above hooks. Catrìona (talk) 05:58, 30 September 2018 (UTC)
General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems

Hook eligibility:

  • Cited: Yes - Offline/paywalled citation accepted in good faith
  • Interesting: No - I'm not convinced that any of the hooks proposed are suitable, but improvements might be made.
  • Other problems: No - Most of the hooks would be better reworded to not have the exact title. See my nominations waiting to be approved for examples on how not to use the exact title in a hook.

Image eligibility:

QPQ: Done.

Overall: Recommend coming up with new hooks that do not include the exact title, then ping me again. Catrìona (talk) 05:58, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

@Catriona: The image is used in the article, and was created by myself. Therefore, even though the above review did not recommend its usage, those two should be checked off as "y" IMHO. The other image utilized in the article is File:FANHS monument & Morro Rock.jpg. It has the monument and Morro Rock in the photograph, but it is not the most representative of the event. This image was also created by me in April 2016. It is difficult to find a picture for an event that happened 400 years ago in what would become Alta California.

It's good though that the article itself is free of issues.
As for the hooks what would you suggest?
How about ALT4 "... that Filipino American History Month occurs every October to commemorate the 1587 arrival of Filipinos to the Continental United States? Source: "Joint House, Senate Resolution Urges Recognition of Filipino American History" NBC News, 16 October 2015
ALT5 "... that Filipinos became the first Asians to be documented in North America, when they landed in, what is now, California in 1587?"Source: John Hopkins Medicine, 2018
ALT6 "... that Martín Ignacio de Loyola was present when Filipinos made landfall, at Morro Bay, in 1587?Source: Manila Men in the New World: Filipino Migration to Mexico and the Americas from the Sixteenth Century Mercene, 2007

  • Catriona is a different user. Most DYK hooks do not come with an image, so if it is not adding something, it should not be used. Therefore, I do not recommend use of either of the suggested images. I do not think that ALT6 is interesting to a broad audience, and therefore propose some variations on some of the above hooks:
ALT7 "... that Filipinos became the first Asians to have a documented presence in North America when they landed in what is now California on 18 October 1587?"
ALT8 "... that Filipino American History Month commemorates the landing of Filipinos on 18 October 1587 in what is now California?
  • Approving ALT7 as the more interesting of the two proposed hooks; it is adequately sourced and is mentioned in the article Rest of the review per Catrìona, this should be good to go. October 18 special requested date is also approved. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 13:42, 3 October 2018 (UTC)
@Narutolovehinata5: I have c/e ALT7, so the bold link encompasses more of the hook.
That said I prefer to have a hook that includes the mention of Filipino American History Month, as October was chosen to recognizance the 1587 landing. Perhaps something like:
ALT9 "... that Filipinos became the first Asians to have a documented presence in North America when they landed in what is now California on 18 October 1587, which is recognized every October during Filipino American History Month?"
--RightCowLeftCoast (Moo) 02:03, 4 October 2018 (UTC)
Honestly I'm not a fan of ALT9: it's already too long, and tries to focus on two things when focusing only on the landing aspect works by itself. In addition, we already had Filipino American History Month on OTD on October 1, so another mention might not be necessary. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 02:23, 4 October 2018 (UTC)
How about ALT10 "...that Filipino American History Month commemorates when the first Asians were documented in the Americas, when Filipinos arrived in California in 1587?" --RightCowLeftCoast (Moo) 01:42, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
I still think ALT7 is better, but as I'm not the original reviewer, I'd like to see what Catrìona's thoughts are here. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 02:59, 11 October 2018 (UTC)

I prefer ALT7 or 8. 9 and 10 seem rambling / trying to combine two hooks into one. Striking as they have not been approved. Catrìona (talk) 03:46, 11 October 2018 (UTC)

I was unaware that the review got to choose the hook. I have often seen it being chosen by those that place it into the queue, or have I been misinformed about that. The ALT10 statement is a combination of facts verified by the Mercury News, as well as by the Smithsonian Institute. I can see how for those outside of the United States that Filipino American History Month is not important to the relation to the subject of the event. And yes, it is great that On This Day section of the main page has had a link to Filipino American History Month, but its relation to the subject of the article which is the DYK nominated, is important in its own right. Thus I can understand striking ALT9, but not ALT10.--RightCowLeftCoast (Moo) 05:46, 12 October 2018 (UTC)
  • @RightCowLeftCoast: yes, we do try to take the nominator's preference in consideration, but I agree that ALT7 is a much punchier hook, plus it includes the date for a special occasion request. ALTs 9 and 10 simply add too much information to what is already a good hook. I'm going ahead and promoting ALT7. Watch for the pageviews! Yoninah (talk) 12:45, 15 October 2018 (UTC)
