Maudgalyayana

[edit]
  • ... that Maudgalyayana, a leading disciple of the Buddha, was known for his psychic powers? Source:"Mahāmaudgalyāyana was considered supreme among the Buddha’s disciples in supranormal powers (ṚDDHI)."(Buswell and Lopez, 2013, entry on Mahāmaudgalyāyana.)
    • ALT1:... that in later tradition, Maudgalyayana, a leading disciple of the Buddha, became known for his filial piety? Source:"Mahamaudgalyayana is venerated in East Asia for his filial piety and shamanic powers."(Mrozik, 2004, p.488)
    • ALT2:... that Maudgalyayana, a leading disciple of the Buddha, had the first ever Buddha image made? Source: "This popular account also reports that the Buddha's disciples Maudgalyayna transported thirty-two craftsmen up to the heavenly realm so that the could observe the special marks of the Buddha firsthand..."(Brown, 2013, p.371)
    • ALT3:... that Maudgalyayana, a leading disciple of the Buddha, was killed because of bad karma he had committed in a previous life? Source:"Even so, Mahāmaudgalyāyana's supranormal powers, unsurpassed in the world, were insufficient to overcome the law of cause and effect and the power of his own former deeds, as the famous tale of his death demonstrates."(Buswell and Lopez, 2013, entry on Mahāmaudgalyāyana.)
    • ALT4:... that in the nineteenth century, relics were found attributed to Maudgalyayana, a leading disciple of the Buddha? Source:"When Cunningham opened the topes (memorial mounds) at Sanchi, he found in one of them two boxes containing fragments of bone and inscribed respectively 'Of Sariputta' and 'Of Moggallana the Great' in Pali letters of Asoka's time." Improved to Good Article status by Farang Rak Tham (talk) and Samahita (talk). Nominated by Farang Rak Tham (talk) at 20:02, 5 March 2018 (UTC).

  • The article was promoted within a week of the nomination, is long enough, and doesn't present any outstanding issues. (I haven't gone through the entire text but I trust the GA review was adequate.) QPQ done. Hooks ALT0, ALT1, ALT3 and ALT4 verified. Prefer ALT4, since it's most real-world-related and not dependent on Buddhist beliefs (as ALT3 (which I've modified the wording to say bad karma) is).
  • Thank you again for all your efforts, Paul 012. I was going to remove a number of alt hooks because no nominator had time and interest to look at it all, but now I do not have to do that.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 16:10, 16 April 2018 (UTC)
  • ALT0 is okay, while ALT1 isn't very interesting IMO (there's also a minor detail which I'll further query on the talk page).
  • I'm not quite convinced of the wording of ALT2. "... had the first ever Buddha image made" sounds like he was the one who ordered the image built, which isn't the case. Feel free to suggest a rewording if you like, otherwise we can go with the remaining hooks.
  • I like the image, but it needs to identify which figure the subject is, and the hooks should also do so with e.g. (pictured, standing right).
  • I've modified the image licence tag, since PD-100 wasn't quite accurate. --Paul_012 (talk) 08:21, 16 April 2018 (UTC)
  • Okay, there's no freedom of panorama there, so it's good we got the right tag. Thanks!--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 16:10, 16 April 2018 (UTC)
