Skyscraper (horse)

[edit]

Skyscraper, painted by George Stubbs in 1790

Created/expanded by Moonraker (talk). Self nom at 07:10, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

solid article, learned a lot (did not know that the word Skyscraper existed then, for example), pic fine, prefer the original hook. If you start with Skyscraper, you could make it quirky. My last quirky is on top of my user page, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:29, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
I don't think the original hook is that good because Byerley Turk is one of three founders of the modern Thoroughbred horse racing bloodstock, and thus there are way too many other horses that are also "in the direct male line of the Byerley Turk." --PFHLai (talk) 20:32, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
ALT2... that Skyscraper (pictured), offspring of the great Highflyer and in the direct male line of the Byerley Turk, won the Epsom Derby of 1789? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:17, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
If this is interesting as hook materials, then let's make it a double hook with Skyscraper's brother:

How about this sextuple DYK hook:
(Pls see also Template:Did you know nominations/Paris (horse), Ditto (horse), Archduke (horse) & Sir Harry above.) --PFHLai (talk) 22:14, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
I have adjusted the original hook per Gerda's suggestion. With respect, PFH, although thousands of horses are descended from the Byerley Turk, astonishingly few are in his direct sire line. No objection to Alt3. Doesn't Alt4 rather attenuate the interest of each article? I understand DYK regulars compete with each other over multiple hooks, but in that line six is now quite a modest number... Moonraker (talk) 23:32, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
My favourite is ALT2. Something more interesting could be said about Noble by himself, that he won it as his first race, right? The quirky version is good if the picture is not taken. (Please next time don't change a hook later, it makes the discussion more difficult to understand.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:47, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
Never mind about my compound hook if Moonraker is not interested. I can make a new hook for Noble. But I thought that Byerley Turk's sire line refers to horses listed on Byerley Turk#Byerley Turk sire line, which is quite long a list. So it's not unique, nor quirky material, imho. --PFHLai (talk) 19:39, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
That new hook for Noble was DYK'ed yesterday. --PFHLai (talk) 16:02, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
  • Start over: ALT2 with pic (preferred) or quirky
ALT5:... that Skyscraper won the Epsom Derby of 1789? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:13, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
I still prefer my original hook... rather a high proportion of the horses we have seen at DYK lately have won the Derby! PFHLai's link is very helpful and rather makes my point, considering that there are now literally millions of Thoroughbred horses. Moonraker (talk) 01:52, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
I would like to emphasize that the list on Byerley Turk#Byerley Turk sire line is incomplete and already very, very long.
And I think the only Derby winner to date that would work in a quirky hook as in ALT5 is Santa Claus (horse) (1964).
--PFHLai (talk) 16:02, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
repeated from above, I prefer the serious ALT2 pictured, but if a quirky one is needed, there are three choices, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:21, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
