Tom Doerr
[edit]... that the original lambda sign (pictured) designed by Tom Doerr was Chrome yellow, a reference to Aldous Huxley’s novel Crome Yellow, on dark blue field?Source: "Tom Doerr originally colored it chrome yellow (a reference to Huxley’s novel Chrome Yellow which was very popular with gay activists of the time) on a dark blue field." - New enough, long enough, concise and within policy regarding neutrality. Copyvio brings up a sentence which I think needs to be addressed, "Robinson was born in Brooklyn and attended New York University. He worked as a union carpenter specializing in residential remodeling." which appears to be word for word from the NY Times. I take it as an accident in good faith and easily fixed. There is an inline citation missing for the section 'Early life'. Other paragraphs are cited.
- Hook is broadly interesting and the article though short is interesting too. I always struggle with image copyright as I cannot get my head around it but in this case the image s created by the author so i am assuming it is fine.
- QPQ is done (incidentally copyvio is working fine now as the QPQ mentions it was offline). Thanks for the article. Mramoeba (talk) 23:21, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
- Mramoeba: added the source (it's Find a grave but I use it only for the parents and burials details and it's supported by a photo) and changed the sentence about Marty Robinson. Elisa.rolle (talk) 23:33, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
- Great, ready to go. Also thanks for your considerable contributions to Women in Red! Mramoeba (talk) 23:39, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
- Hi, I came by to promote this, but am wondering about the dearth of citations. Other than The New York Times, has he received significant coverage in reliable secondary sources that are independent of the subject? Yoninah (talk) 23:41, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
- Yoninah: 751 result in Google Books if you search for "Tom Doerr": [2] and Doerr is unanimously recognized as the designer of the Lambda Symbol associated to the LGBT community. Elisa.rolle (talk) 23:52, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

- Yoninah: I added some, there are many more stating that Doerr is the one who designed the Lambda but I think two are enough. Elisa.rolle (talk) 00:24, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you. No close paraphrasing seen in newly added sources. Looking at the hook, I'm just wondering why you didn't mention that it was designed for the gay movement? Otherwise the hook doesn't make sense to readers who don't know who Tom Doerr was or what's the connection with Huxley's novel. Yoninah (talk) 00:50, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
- Yoninah: ALT1:
... that the original lambda sign (pictured) designed by Tom Doerr as a symbol for the Gay Activists Alliance was Chrome yellow, a reference to Aldous Huxley’s novel Crome Yellow, on dark blue field?Elisa.rolle (talk) 01:04, 10 September 2017 (UTC)- ALT1 is good, a little longer but this will work well especially in the top slot. Happy with this. Mramoeba (talk) 08:43, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
- If we trim off the ending it would be crisper:
- ALT1a:

- Yoninah: good for me. Elisa.rolle (talk) 16:46, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
- Alt1a is better. Thanks. Mramoeba (talk) 17:07, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
- @Mramoeba: could you give it an approval tick? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 19:58, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
- Whoops, one more trimming suggestion:
- ALT1b: ... that the lambda (pictured) designed by Tom Doerr as a symbol for the Gay Activists Alliance was chrome yellow, a reference to Aldous Huxley's novel Crome Yellow? Yoninah (talk) 20:00, 10 September 2017 (UTC)

@Elisa.rolle: could you please confirm that Doerr designed the lambda as a symbol for the Gay Activists Alliance? The article doesn't mention that. It says only that he "introduced it into the gay movement". Yoninah (talk) 22:24, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
- Same source of original hook: "Tom Doerr originally (in the 1970’s) intended the lambda sign to refer to the political work of GAA (Gay Activist Alliance) specifically, and it was only later that it became a sign for gay liberation in general."
@Elisa.rolle: could you make that distinction clear in the article, with a cite? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 23:19, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
