Flipped version instead?

[edit]

The version with life at the top and species at the bottom would be better: it wouldn't look like funnels flowing down, and it would use the most important and parent classification at the top which is more natural for English and is used in all taxoboxes - see Mexican Funnel-eared Bat. -- Jeandré, 2008-01-13t09:44z

Works for me either way. —Pengo 02:43, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If no objections, then I'll flip it. Hires an editor (talk) 00:22, 6 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Biological definition is not by genus and differentia.

[edit]

I have deleted the claim that the rank hierarchy involves definition by genus and differentia. In the latter, the genus is taken as given and the differentia provides the the characteristics that pick out the species. The genus is logically prior. Under the ICZN and ICN codes, on the other hand, the type species is prior, as it must be designated in the definition of the genus. The two approaches are not only different but fundamentally opposed. Peter M. Brown (talk) 17:58, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Error at Wikimedia Commons

[edit]

There seems to be no English version of the flipped file currently accessible at Wikimedia Commons: you get the Burmese version instead. So I've altered the template to use the unflipped English image, pending fixes at Wikimedia Commons. Peter coxhead (talk) 11:04, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 26 December 2021

[edit]

Greetings and felicitations. While I have the permission(s) to edit the template, I do not know how to make this correction. When the template is used in Class (biology), the link in the middle of the template's caption for the next higher rank is capitalized instead of lower case. I.e.: "A Phylum contains one or more classes." This does not appear to be the case for any other rank. —DocWatson42 (talk) 03:44, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
