Its territory corresponded with that of the current municipality Trifylia and the municipal units Dorio, Eira and Nestoras.[3] The province was founded in 1833, comprising the northern part of the newly formed Messenia Prefecture. It was abolished with the administrative reform of 1836, but re-established in 1848. In 1899, along with the neighbouring Olympia Province (until then part of the Elis Prefecture, it formed the short-lived Trifylia Prefecture, which was abolished in 1909.
