Michael Manheim Tony Award nominated, Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner Michael Manheim has produced fifteen theatrical and television movies and a Broadway musical that have received a multitude of international awards and nominations. As principal of Jaman Properties, a boutique residential real estate development company, Manheim has designed and built over 20 high-profile residences in Los Angeles and New York.

Early Life and Education

Michael Manheim grew up in California and Arizona, the trumpet playing son of a college professor. He was educated at The Verde Valley School and Harvard University where he graduated with honors in Government, worked for Daniel Patrick Moynihan, and played first trumpet with The Hasty Pudding Theatricals and The Harvard University Band--including performing at Carnegie Hall.

A week after Mr. Manheim graduated from college, he received his acceptance letter to Oxford for graduate school and… his draft notice. He was given the choice of serving 2 years in Viet Nam or 6 years in the Rhode Island National Guard Band. When Mr. Manheim tells people, “Music saved my life” it’s not an exaggeration.

Professional life

In 1972, Manheim began his show business career as a production executive for David L. Wolper, supervising over 100 productions ranging from dramas: the “Appointment with Destiny at IMDb” and Stanley Kramer’s “Judgment” specials, to hit comedies: “Welcome Back Kotter” and “Chico And The Man”.

From 1982 to 1986, Mr. Manheim served as Vice President of Creative Affairs at Norman Lear's and Jerry Perenchio’s Embassy Pictures where he oversaw theatrical film development and production for a slate of motion pictures.

In 1986, Manheim launched The Manheim Company through a deal with NBC, producing eight movies for television including: Emmy Award winner, Roe vs. Wade (film) starring Holly Hunter and Kathy Bates; Emmy Award Nominee, Last Flight Out at IMDb, starring James Earl Jones and Oscar winner Dr. Haing S. Ngor; Emmy winning Christmas perennial, “I'll Be Home for Christmas (film)” starring Hal Holbrook, Courtney Cox and Eva Marie Saint and multiple award winner, “Winnie at IMDb” co-produced with Bette Midler.

The Manheim Company’s independent productions included: Golden Globe Award winner, “Dirty Pictures (film)” starring James Woods; Paramount’sLeap of Faith (film)”, starring Steve Martin and Liam Neeson, Scott Frank's “Plain Clothes (film)” also for Paramount; “Zooman at IMDb”, written by Pulitzer Prize winner Charles Fuller; ABC'sTrial by Fire at IMDb” and “Jitters at IMDb” for Lifetime.

Mr. Manheim has served on the Board of Governors of The Producers Guild of America and, partnered with Paula Wagner, produced “The 2012 Producers Guild of America Awards” featuring George Clooney, Steven Spielberg, Stan Lee, Alicia Keys, Viola Davis, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Sofia Vergara, among others.

Theatre

Mr. Manheim was a lead producer of the musical adaptation of his film, “Leap of Faith (film)” for the stage with productions at The Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles and The St. James Theatre on Broadway. The show’s score was written by eight-time Oscar winner, Alan Menken with book by Warren Leight and Janus Cercone, based on Ms. Cercone’s original screenplay. The show was nominated for multiple awards including the Tony Award for Best Original Musical.

Since 1983, Michael Manheim and his wife and creative partner, Janus Cercone, have built or renovated numerous homes for their personal use. In 2003, that hobby became a business with the creation of Jaman Properties, a real estate development company specializing in designing and building one of a kind residences. Frequently selling to studio heads and marquee names, such as Conan O’Brien, Matt Groening, Fran Drescher and, most recently, banking scion, Michael Schwab, Jaman’s distinctive homes have been widely featured in the media, including numerous television shows, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Sun-Times, The London Daily Mail, Architectural Digest, Forbes, Fortune and Variety among others. For two years running, the Los Angeles Business Journal has named Jaman Properties as one of the region's “100 Fastest growing Private Companies".

Personal Life

In his limited free time, Mr. Manheim has served as an unpaid apprentice cook in two of LA’s top Italian restaurants. He lives in Malibu with his wife, the writer/designer Janus Cercone. He still occasionally picks up his trumpet.
