In 1970, Carter drew media attention when he closed the large ceremonial front doors of the church as a protest against the Vietnam War. He noted

At the April 1973 ceremony at which the doors were reopened, Carter noted, "This is no moment of triumph. We reopen our doors as an affirmation, to a peace ... which will offer mankind a new life on this planet."^[1] The ceremony was interspersed with the sounding of a shofar, the ram's horn traditionally used in Jewish services. Though he considered the peace to be no more than an "armistice" enforced by the "terror of nuclear warheads," Carter said that the church "chose this moment to signify our thanksgiving that our bombers no longer rake the ravaged land, that our prisoners of war are finally home and our fighting forces withdrawn (from) an enterprise which drained the spiritual as well as the material resources of our land."^[1]

In recent years, the St. John's community actively voiced its opposition to the War in Iraq and other interventions in the Middle East. Each Sunday, the names of each American military person who died in the war were read at the church's services. A banner at the back of the church had a cross marked for each American death in the war. And during the procession of the palms during Palm Sunday services, members of the congregation carried anti-war protest signs along with their palms.^{[citation needed]}

At the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine the church hoisted the flag of Ukraine in support of the country and its armed forces, while calling for a quick and peaceful settlement on the issue.^{[citation needed]}

On the Israeli–Palestinian conflict the parish hold a semi-neutral view advocating for a Two State solution and the complete Israeli withdrawal of the West Bank (as most of the Episcopal Church formally does), during the 2023 Israel–Hamas war the parish community has called for a ceasefire and prays weekly for the ending of the conflict.^{[citation needed]}

After an Arab uprising against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War in 1916, British forces drove Ottoman forces out of the Levant. The United Kingdom had agreed in the McMahon–Hussein Correspondence that it would honor Arab independence in case of a revolt but, in the end, the United Kingdom and France divided what had been Ottoman Syria under the Sykes–Picot Agreement—an act of betrayal in the eyes of the Arabs. Another issue was the Balfour Declaration of 1917, in which Britain promised its support for the establishment of a Jewish "national home" in Palestine. Mandatory Palestine was then established in 1920, and the British obtained a Mandate for Palestine from the League of Nations in 1922.

Matthew Alan Gunter (born December 20, 1957)^[1] is the ninth and current bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Wisconsin in The Episcopal Church. He assumed this post upon the 2024 merger of the Dioceses of Eau Claire and Fond du Lac with the Diocese of Milwaukee. From 2014 to 2024, he was the diocesan bishop of Fond du Lac. Prior to becoming bishop, he served as Rector of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, and as Assistant Rector of St. David Church, Glenview, Illinois.^[2]

Early life and education

Gunter was raised on a farm in northern Indiana and worked in the family-run sawmill. He received his bachelor's degree in history from Indiana University Bloomington. He then taught and worked in education. He married Leslie in 1981. After college, he attended Gordon-Conwell Seminary for a time then moved to California, where he taught high school. While there he was a member of a Lutheran church and volunteered as the youth leader until he joined an Episcopal church and was confirmed in 1990. In 1993, he attended Virginia Theological Seminary, receiving his degree in 1996.^[3]

Gunter was ordained deacon on June 8, 1996, by Bishop David Mercer Schofield and a priest on December 21, 1996, by Bishop Frank Griswold. In addition to his pastoral work at the parish level, Gunter served as

Election as Bishop

Gunter was elected bishop of the Diocese of Fond du Lac on October 19, 2013. Following a successful consent process, he was consecrated bishop on April 26, 2014, by Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori in Appleton, Wisconsin.^[4]^[5]^[6]
