History

[edit]

The university was established in 1419 without the Theological faculty by confirmation of pope Martin V. and is thus the oldest university in the Northern Europe. The ceremonial opening was held on the 10th of november 1419 under the name Universitas Rostochiensis. Due to the fear of theological opposition, the Theological faculty was not opened until 1432.

The three founding faculties were the Faculty of law, medicine and Facultas artium which is today the philso.... faculty.
