Spoon University

[edit]

Spoon University is a privately owned Internet media company based in New York City. This lifestyle website claims to be "the every day food source of our generation,"[1] and showcases articles on food-related subjects. Spoon University covers an array of topics, from news stories, lifestyle pieces, recipes and how-to articles, to a combination of both international and local stories. Spoon University navigates different forms of media - including the use of listicles, videos, Snapchat discover pages, Instagram photos and Facebook statuses - in order to connect to millennial readers. To date, Spoon University has accumulated over 1.7 million Facebook subscribers[2] and draws in over 2 million unique readers each month[3]. Spoon University specifically targets the college student demographic, because they aim to simplify reader's first kitchen experiences[1]. The tone of the website is light and relatable to "emphasize the real, authentic, raw fun side of food" that isn't typically displayed in other food blogs, like The Food Network[3].

Spoon University also trains student contributors to work in the media industry through their Secret Sauce program. Their training programs are catered to each position that a contributor can hold. These positions include writer, marketer, community engagement manager, photographer and videographer[1]. Contributors pay a one-time membership fee to Spoon University in order to use their publishing platform[4].

History

[edit]

This company was co-founded by Mackenzie Barth and Sarah Adler in 2009, while they were students at Northwestern University [5]. Spoon University began as a print magazine that provided a guide to cooking and eating in Chicago. As their publication grew in popularity, Barth and Adler expanded Spoon University into an online network. Spoon University's official website was launched in March 2014 with a 100-person team of Northwestern students[3]. As of 2016, Spoon University is composed of over 150 college campuses and 5,000 collegiate contributors from the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, and India.[1]

Secret Sauce

[edit]

In 2013, when Spoon University was still in its early developmental stages, Barth and Adler manually launched chapters at different universities. As the network grew in size, an online program called Secret Sauce was created to ensure seamless communication and training in one location[6]. Secret sauce is where writers complete mandatory training, contribute content, and receive personalized analytics.

Within each chapter there are five different positions that contributors can apply for. These positions are writer, photographer, videographer, marketer, and chapter leader[1]. Each position requires a different set of skills of its contributors, and Secret Sauce provides the training to develop these skills. As such, there are separate training modules for each position, which contributors are required to complete. The writer program requires training on topics including pitching an article, writing an article, and citing information within an article. This differs from the videographer program that offers modules on creating a video and distributing a video[7].

Secret Sauce is managed by Spoon University Headquarters[1]. Any article published on Spoon University is pitched, written and edited on Secret Sauce. This allows for constant communication, organization and supervision between Headquarters, chapter leaders, and contributors. For an article to be published, the writer must complete the following process in order: receive pitch approval (or choose from a list of pre-approved pitches), write a complete draft, set an appropriate SEO (Search Engine Optimization), submit the article to campus editor, make final edits, submit the edited article to Headquarters, distribute published article, and review analytics[7].

Upon publishing an article, writers receive personalized analytics on the performance of their work[1]. Analytics provide insight on three areas: traffic, social, and sources. "Traffic" determines the number of individual page views, "Social" provides insight to how many times an article has been shared over social media, and "Sources": displays which media outlets have shared a direct link to the article. These analytics show each article's strengths and weaknesses[3].
