Green Cover in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad city is the largest city in the state of Gujarat.The city of Ahmedabad has 4.66% of its geographical area under green cover . The city is house to some of the most famous parks/gardens namely Parimal Garden, Law Garden, Victoria Garden etc. As of 2018, the city is house to 202 municipal parks and gardens.

As for trees and green cover, Ahmedabad which is spread over 46,985 hectare area has 6.18 lakh trees.The city is home to maximum number Eco-friendly giant trees in Gujarat. Although Ahmedabad has low tree density, old and giant trees have high environmental and social value. The important trees found in Ahmedabad are Neem, Asopalava, Kanji, Gulmohar, Peepal etc. of In the recent 2 years, Ahmedabad saw a forest cover decline of about 13%. Total tree population in the area of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority(AUDA) (including surrounding villages) is 14.12 lakh.

City Parks and History

Parks and Heritage Parks have been one of the oldest recreational spots in the country, and Ahmedabad is no exception. They have been very well been included in Ahmedabad's heritage along with Pols and Old City, and parks have a historic and cultural value in Ahmedabad. Some of the historic parks in Ahmedabad includes Law Garden. Law Garden is situated near Law College in Ahmedabad, hence the name. When it comes to aesthetic, Law Garden comes somewhere near the top. It is famous for different things at different times of the day. In the morning, it is famous for being a hub for morning walks, as well as snacks. In the evening, it is a really famous market for handicrafts and traditional Gujarati dresses, along with offering sing chana and Bhajipav.

Vastrapur Lake Garden is situated in Vastrapur area, hence the name. This garden is comparatively newer to other gardens and is situated in one of the busiest areas of the city. Along with being a hub for morning walks and variety of breakfast snacks, it is also a hub for evening snacks, specially South Indian food and Chinese food. Victoria Garden Victoria Garden was constructed in honour of Queen Victoria, situated at the southern edge of Bhadgra Fort. It has marveled European and Arab tourists alike. It has a statue of Queen Victoria, properly maintained with shrubs and grasses and open to public for exercises and walking.

City parks and gardens serve as the major attraction for tourists as well as a recreational space for the general public. They also serve as a business generation space for local vendors. Law Garden is one such famous example of that. Law Garden is an open garden in the city of Ahmedabad. It is also known as the handicraft hub of Ahmedabad. The entire boundary wall of the garden has been utilised by venturesome Gujarati's to open up their tea stalls, snacks, gaming shops, kids rides, pop shops and to the furthest enjoyment of numerous traditional clothing seekers. It has a festive feel 365 days a year on this side of the garden that plays host to these shops. At riverfront,a Netherlands based organisation introduced five new modern rides. It has the Boomerang Roller Coaster, the Flipping Arm, the Torching Tower. It will likewise have a children play zone for PC video games in the soon future.

Sabarmati Riverfront as a Park

Sabarmati Riverfront serves as a well-planned waterfront to the city of Ahmedabad along the river of Sabarmati. It is an extension of Sabarmati Ashram established by Mahatma Gandhi. It consists of numerous parks to serve the city’s green cover. Around 26% of its land is being utilised to create public parks, gardens and plaza for public recreation. These green spaces are aimed to enhance the livability of the people in neighbourhood and city providing relaxation from the densely built environment. Riverfront Parks at Subhash Bridge and Usmanpura have already been open to public since October,2013 while the Riverfront Park at Khanpur is proposed. A permanent flower garden has been gifted to the city which runs along the Sabarmati Riverfront. Both, seasonal and non-seasonal flowers could be enjoyed by people throughout the year. It provides entry to public at nominal rates. Also, every year,flower show is organised by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation since 2013 which is open to public free of cost. An urban forest extending from Vasna Barrage to Paldi is also proposed that would serve as a neighbourhood park as well as dense wooden area with botanical garden to the nearby areas. The government has undertaken various projects to transform Ahmedabad's Riverfront to reconnect the city with its river. By reclaiming around 202 hectares of riverbed land on both sides of the river, for a length of nearly twelve kilometres, the project replaces a largely private riverfront with a public realm that will connect an expansive network of parks and promenades for the city’s five million residents to enjoy. Over the quarter of the land reclaimed is to be dedicated to parks and plazas. These will provide more open green space to the 5 million residents of Ahmebabad City. Few of the signifant project that emerged as a part of this object are: 1) Riverfront Park, Subhash bridge 2) Riverfront Park, Usmanpura 3) River Promenade.

Ahmedabad Flower Show

Ahmedabad city parks specially the Riverfront Parks are known in the world for the Annual Ahmedabad Flower Show which has completed Six successful editions. Organized by the AMC (Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation), It was inaugurated by Honorable Chief Minister of the state Shri Vijay Rupani on 2nd January 2018.This year the Flower Show witnessed more than 750 species and more than 5 lakh in number of flowers and plants, spread across 1 lakh sq.m. and attracted saplings and flower species imported from neighbor nations like Malaysia,Thailand, Singapore hence promoting Eco-Tourism in India.

Ownership of gardens

There are nearly 58 gardens under Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and other mostly under mother dairy and very less of them are under different institutes like torrent AUDA etc.Mostly these gardens are maintained under mother dairy out of which in 2010 they have handed over 55 gardens to AMUL so that they can have their store there.After its success of this AMUL tie up the had decided to have more 45 gardens for the same purpose.
