Lani Price is a fictional character on the NBC daytime soap opera Days of Our Lives. Created by then head-writers Josh Griffith and Dena Higley, and introduced by executive producers Albert Alarr, Ken Corday and Greg Meng, the role is portrayed by actress Sal Stowers. Stowers made her first appearance on September 25, 2015. Stowers was let go in March 2016, following a change in writing regime. In December 2016, Stowers returned to the role of Lani.
Casting and creation
[edit]In March 2015, a casting call was sent out by Days of Our Lives for the character of "Lani". Per the casting notice, the soap was looking for an "African-American woman in her late 20s/early 30s" and was described as "stunning, strong and savvy", with the character set to begin filming mid-April. While the casting call listed "Lani" as a "major recurring" character, it did reveal that there was the potential for the role to be promoted to a series regular.[1] On June 30, 2015, it was announced that former America's Next Top Model winner and All My Children actress Sal Stowers was hired in the regular role of Lani Price and made her first appearance on September 25, 2015.[2] On March 22, 2016, Daytime Confidential reported that Stowers had been let go from the soap, as part of a mass "bloodbath" following a writing regime change.
In December 2016, it was announced that shortly following her firing, Stowers had been contacted about rejoining the soap. On her return, Stowers expressed: "No one knew I was coming back, so it was a surprise for everyone." Upon news of Stowers' return, Michael Goldberg speculated that a casting call for the role of "Deanna" — sent out earlier in the year — had been an attempt by the soap to recast the role, before deciding to re-hire Stowers in the role.[3]
Character development
[edit]Storylines
[edit]Lani Price arrives in Salem, as a transfer from Miami, for the Salem Police Department in September 2015. She is later revealed to be the illegitimate daughter of Salem mayor, Abe Carver, whom had a relationship with Lani's mother, Tamara Price. After connecting with Abe and her half-brother Theo Carver, Lani is promoted to a police detective at the Salem PD and begins to engage in a relationship with Shawn-Douglas Brady (Brandon Beemer).
