David Arnebeck[edit]

David Arnebeck is a mixed martial art and brazilian jiu jitsu instructor with over 30 years teaching experience based out of Minnesota, USA[1]. He is the founder of the Warrior's Cove Mixed Martial Arts Centers . Arnebeck grew up in northern Minnesota and after living for a short time in New Jersey, moved back to Minnesota taking up residence in the Minneapolis - Saint Paul metro area.

Personal History[edit]

Mr. Arnebeck began his training at age four (1968) under his father, Wallace Arnebeck, who was a boxer, and after started training in various martial art systems including Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do concepts, Chi Kung Kung Fu, Tang Soo Do, Wing Chun Kung Fu, Danzan Ryu Jiu Jitsu & Brazilian Jiu Jitsu[2]. In addition to the extensive formal training listed previously, Arnebeck also studied numerous other combative arts such Kobudo, Wrestling, Tai Chi, Muay Thai, Judo, etc. for the purpose of continually seeking what works regardless of source or style. Due to the influence of Bruce Lee's concepts, in addition to the obvious advantages of integrating martial art knowledge and training systems, Arnebeck continued to incorporate what worked best from all the styles he studied. This was long before the term, "mixed martial arts" existed. Arnebeck simply called this integration of training "martial art cross-training" and eventually adopted one of the traditional names for mixed martial arts, Shinbudo[3] . Using the Shinbudo Mixed Martial Arts System at the Warrior's Cove, Arnebeck has taught thousands of students from beginners to black belt instructors, military special forces, law enforcement, men, women & children. Hundreds of reviews by members of the Warrior's Cove continue to endorse the methods and effectiveness of the Shinbudo MMA system of training[4]. Many students of the Warrior's Cove went on to become martial art champions in striking, grappling and MMA competitions[5], and/or instructors [6].

1968 David Arnebeck Begins Boxing[edit]

David Arnebeck's father, Wallace Arnebeck, was a state boxing champion. Wallace taught David how to box starting with "play boxing" at a very young age. Wallace would continue to spar David in boxing for the next 14 years up until he was approximately 18 years old. Wallace Arnebeck taught the "scientific" approach to boxing where the strategy was never to get hit using good footwork and good technique.[7]

1980 David Arnebeck Begins Chi Kung Kung Fu[edit]

In the early part of 1980, at age 15, David Arnebeck enrolled into Chi Kung Kung Fu Training under Sifu Jeff Carlson. Mr. Carlson trained in many different martial arts but emphasized Chi Kung training. Carlson learned Chi Kung under Master Lily Siou in Hawaii who is also the author of the Chi Kung book Mastering The Unseen Life Force. David Arnebeck eventually would become Carlson's private student with the majority of training occurring at Carlson's residence. At a very young age Mr. Arnebeck was exposed to the value of meditation, proper breathing, relaxation during movement, flexibility training, and the Chinese concepts of energy and healing.[8]

1980 David Arnebeck Begins Teaching Martial Arts[edit]

In 1980 Eric Mudget confronted David Arnebeck in the high school hallway...

"I hear you know martial arts?" said Mudget. "Yes," replied Arnebeck. "I want to learn. Can you teach me?" requested Mudget. "Sure," replied Arnebeck.

... and after that simple beginning, David Arnebeck has been teaching martial arts ever since. Eventually, after continuing his training under different masters and styles, David Arnebeck re-branded his teachings and school as the Warrior's Cove Martial Arts & Fitness Gyms in the Minneapolis and Saint Paul Minnesota area teaching thousands of members. [9]

1982 Minnesota Tang Soo Do Demo Team[edit]

At 16 years old, and after extensive training in Boxing, Karate, Kobudo and Kung Fu, David Arnebeck enrolled into the martial art of Tang Soo Do in July 1981. Summer 1982: David Arnebeck took part in the Minnesota Tang Soo Do Demo Team to help promote his instructor's gym, as well as spread word of the art in northern Minnesota. This was before Mr. Arnebeck was promoted to Tang Soo Do Black Belt, so he is wearing a Red Belt, which in traditional Tang Soo Do is the rank just prior to Black Belt. Senior Tang Soo Do Instructors participated in showcasing their skills including Master Lawrence Seiberlich, Bob Willis, Jeff Goodwin, and Tom Lux.[10]

1982 David Arnebeck Black Belt Test[edit]

October 31, 1982 David Arnebeck tested for Tang Soo Do Black Belt under Master Lawrence Seiberlich and a testing board of several other Senior Black Belts including Jeff Goodwin, Bryan Van Gorp, Robert Willis and Charlotte Grove. The test took place in Saint Paul, MN. According to Master Seiberlich, David Arnebeck was one of only 5 individuals in the history of the US Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan to achieve Black Belt in 15 months. This was due, in part, from extensive Boxing, Karate, Kobudo and Kung Fu training prior to starting Tang Soo Do in 1981. David Arnebeck's dan# was 22947 (22946 Black Belts promoted in the organization prior to Mr. Arnebeck's promotion).[11]

Arnebeck continued making the 3 hour round trip drive twice a week to continue his Wing Chun training under Mr. Larson. Eventually Arnebeck moved to Duluth, MN and continued training in the art. David Arnebeck incorporated elements of the Wing Chun system that are easily applied into the MMA training at the Warrior's Cove.[14]

David Arnebeck was a private investigator for 9 years working hundreds of cases in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. David Arnebeck eventually was promoted to Head of Operations for the Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and Southern Minnesota region for his firm. In 1998 the combined workload of private investigation along with the continued growth of his martial arts gym, the Warrior's Cove, Arnebeck decided to submit his resignation in order to devote his full time and energy into working with his students. The Warrior's Cove Gyms continued to grow into the leading organization providing reality based MMA, Rickson Gracie Jiu Jitsu, Fitness Kickboxing, Kids and Family Classes, Free Women's Self-Defense and much more, for the Minneapolis and Saint Paul MN area.[15]

Although Mr. Arnebeck had achieved significant success in Tang Soo Do, including winning the Tang Soo Do National Black Belt Sparring Championships, he decided to refocus on the essence of reality based martial art training (MMA) as defined by the legendary warriors such as Sun Tzu, the Shaolin, Miyamoto Musashi and more recently, Bruce Lee.[16]

However, if one chooses to enter these sporting events, he suggests it should be viewed only as supplemental training to test what one has learned.
