AMTS[edit]

Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) runs the public bus service in the city of Ahmedabad in India.The responsibility of the administration of AMTS comes under the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.[1] At present, AMTS has 750 buses servicing the city. In addition AMTS is also responsible for 50 BRTS buses, and 100 feeder buses. The responsibility of the administration of AMTS comes under the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.[2]

BRTS[edit]

Janmarg, also known as Ahmedabad BRTS, is a bus rapid transport system[4] in Ahemdabad[5] Gujarat, India. It is operated by Ahmedabad Janmarg ltd , a subsidary of ahmedabad municipal corporation[6] and others. It is designed by CEPT UNIVERSITY[7]. It was inaugurated in October 2009. The network expanded to 89 kilometres (55 mi) by December 2017 with daily ridership of 2,49,000 passengers. BRTS won several nation and international awards for design, implementation and operation. It was rated Silver on BRT Standard[8] in 2013.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has incorporated a "Special Purpose Vehicle" called Ahmedabad Janmarg Ltd in order to run and to operate BRTS buses. Ahmedabad Janmarg Ltd. is registered under Companies Act, 1956 and is 100% subsidiary of Amdavad Municipal Corporation. In order to provide faster, reliable, eco friendly and advanced Public Transportation Ahmedabad Janmarg Ltd is committed to operate and run BRTS services for the citizen of Ahmedabad.

Ahmedabad Janmarg Ltd has 87 km operational route with 160 (59 A.C buses) buses and about 1.45 lakhs average passengers per day[9]

Air Transport[edit]

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) (IATA: AMD, ICAO: VAAH) is an international airport serving the cities of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar in Gujarat, India. The airport is located in Hansol, 9 km (5.6 mi) north of central Ahmedabad. It is named after Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the 1st Deputy Prime Minister of India.

In fiscal year 2016-17, it handled over 7.4 million passengers and about 200 aircraft movements a day making it the eighth-busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic in India. The airport also serves as a focus city for GoAir and Jet Airways. In 2015, the government started the procedure for the privatization of the airport. The airport is set to be replaced by Dholera International Airport due to expansion constraints.[12]

The airport was set up in 1937, while international operations began on 26/01/1991. It was categorized as an International airport on 23 May 2000. In 2010, the new terminal 2 was inaugurated for handling international passengers. A18-foot-tall (5.5 m) statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was also inaugurated at the airport. In 2015, the AAI invited proposals for privatisation of Ahmedabad, Chennai, Kolkata and Jaipur airports. [13].

Combining the efforts of local government, scientists and nonprofits, eight new air quality monitoring sites across Ahmedabad will produce a daily air quality index or AQI, which will be accessible to citizens through 11 LED screens across the city, as part of what is called the Air Information and Response plan.[14] An early warning system will notify people of excessive pollution days as part of the response plan, while medical professionals will be trained to respond to air-pollution emergencies. The monitors are installed at eight locations (Bopal, Satellite, Pirana, Raikhad, Navrangpura, Rakhiyal, Chandkheda and the airport) in a city of over 5.5 million people.

Railways[edit]

In 1855, BB&CI signs agreement with British East India Company on 21 Nov to construct railway line from Surat to Baroda and Ahmedabad. Ahmedabad is one of the six operating division of Western Railway. [15] Ahmedabad junction center is the main hub for railways. Ahmedabad junction is also locally called as kalupur station as it is located over that area.

Local trains[edit]

Regional rail system for Ahmedabad was initiated in 2003 by Gujarat infrastructure development board through Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and RITES. The sole purpose of this service was to ensure that people lives in the township of Ahmedabad and reach at work place using suburban rail bases transport system.   • Katosan Road – Viramgam – 38 kms

  • Barejadi – Mehmedabad – 12 kms
  • Mehmedabad – Anand - 36 kms

Intercity trains[edit]

Western Railways were formedfor easy domestic transport.[17] Ahmedabad is one of the six divisions. These railways serves entire Gujarat and some portion of Madhya Pradesh. The coaches available for the train are 3-tier AC, 2-tier AC, Sleeper Coach. The rates are framed eco-friendly.

Metro trains[edit]

Metro project had been started in Ahmedabad on 4th February 2010 namely, Metro-Link Express for Gandhinagar & Ahmedabad (MEGA) Company Ltd. It was incorporated by the Government of Gujarat to implement Metro Rail Project under the Companies Act, 1956. The objective of metro service is to provide safe, fast and eco-friendly transportation services to the public at affordable rates.[18]

Rickshaws[edit]

The three wheeled passenger car usually known as auto rickshaws or tuk-tuk in some part, is a very popular public transportation in India. Ahmedabad in one such city having auto rickshaw as a public transport. It is in green and yellow in color indicating eco-friendly and also they are ran on CNG. The fares are measured on the basis of meter which is fitted in the rickshaw. The normal fares for upto 1 Km is ₹ 11 in day-time and ₹ 14 in night time which is decided by the Government of Gujarat.

There are more than 1.25 lakh auto-rickshaws driven on city roads. Transport experts say auto-rickshaws constitute 5% of the total 31.96 lakh vehicles in Ahmedabad city. On an average, 6,000 auto-rickshaws are added to Ahmedabad streets every year, which is an average annual growth of 7% in their numbers. In the state, there are 6.38 lakh rickshaws, which is 4% of 1.70 crore vehicles.[19]

Cabs[edit]

A decade back common people's perception of cabs was to be the airport taxi or the AC cabs available for outstation travel or for rent ; for internal commuting people used rickshaws or buses. But the scenario changed as the mobile cab operator like ola, uber etc. came in Ahmedabad around 4-5 years ago and changed the game of the public transport industry. In the scorching sun people of ahmedabad are preferring cabs to autos more in the current equation. People of ahmedabad taking rides in cab for commuting has increased exponentially as the fares are affordable even to a common man.

The minimum fares of cabs start at ₹8 per Km ( ola cabs) and ₹7.35 per Km ( Uber) which is the reason why people started switching from rickshaws and buses to cabs. According to the customers demand hatchback cars, sedan cars and SUV cars are provided by the cab operators.

MyByk is a simple sustainable bike-sharing service which enables seamless travel in the city.[20]

Owner of the iconic haveli-turned-hotel 'House of MG' Abhay Mangaldas said in a GQ interview that MyByk could be the next thing for what Ahmedabad could be known[21]

Users just need to go through a simple process to register themselves through their web portal and pay for subscription. Users have the option to take affordable 'fixed subscription plans' or 'pay-on-ride'[22].

Car pool[edit]

Carpooling (also car-sharing, ride-sharing and lift-sharing) is the sharing of car journeys so that more than one person travels in a car, and prevents the need for others to have to drive to a location themselves.

Currently Uber and Ola are providing first-mile/last-mile connectivity with their services, UberPOOL and OlaShare in Ahmedabad.

Share rides are cheaper and more comfortable than auto rides and hence daily middle class commuters in Ahmedabad have switched to ride sharing. India has only an average of 1.2 people in one car at any given point, with the average asset utilisation rate as low as 5%.[23]

Ridesharing solutions such as uberPOOL, have helped in decreasing traffic congestion and carbon emissions in several cities. Share has effectively saved over 7 million litres of fuel and reduced CO2 emissions by over 12 million kilograms in India.[24]

Uber Chief Executive Officer Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber is about mobility reaching to everyone and everywhere and to solve the issue of car ownership in cities.[25]
