User:Stolilv87/Sandbox/List of NIAA Champions

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association champions includes championships won by high schools that are members of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA). Since the NIAA's creation in 1922, the association has awarded ??? championships in 25 sanctioned sports.

Since the 1996–97 academic year, the NIAA has sponsored four classes: Class 4A (schools with enrollments of 1,201 students or larger), Class 3A (schools with enrollments between 461–1,200), Class 2A (schools with enrollments between 170–460) and Class 1A (schools with enrollments of 169 students or less).

Class 4A is the highest classification in the NIAA and offers championships in all of the NIAA's sanctioned sports. Class 1A is the lowest classification, offering championships in most sanctioned sports, while Class 3A and Class 2A can be the lowest classification in other sports. Tennis, skiing and boys' volleyball sponsor only one class champions (Class 4A).

Several sports are competed solely by schools in one region. These include boys' volleyball which is competed by schools in the NIAA's Southern Region and boy's and girl's skiing which is competed by schools in the NIAA's Northern Region. Girls' soccer is competed during two separate seasons. The first season, during the Fall season, is competed by all schools in Class 3A and high schools in from the Northern Region of Class 4A, while the high schools from the Southern Region of Class 4A compete in a championship during the Winter season.

As well as being the main high school athletics association in the state of Nevada, five California high schools are NIAA members and compete in the NIAA's sponsored championships. These five schools are Coleville High School, Needles High School, North Tahoe High School, South Tahoe High School and Truckee High School. .

Cross Country (Boys)[edit]

Second three class era (1996–present)[edit]

Prior to the 1996 Cross Country season, the NIAA instituted a fourth class in the league alignment. Class 4A would become the the classification for the largest schools affiliated with the NIAA. Instead of going to four separate classes, the NIAA combined the boys' cross country Class 2A and 1A championships into one championship under the 2A classification.
