Marshall was born in Madison, Wisconsin and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he attended Taylor Allderdice High School. He debuted at age 12 (with his sisters Maura and Kathleen Marshall) as an active performer with the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera [1]. In 2008 he and Kathleen, with ten Tony Award nominations between them, were honored with CLO's 10th Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theater.

On Broadway, Marshall rose from performer (Chorus Line, Zorba!) to dance captain (The Mystery of Edwin Drood) to choreographer (Company, Victor/Victoria), ultimately affiliated with over 14 productions. [2] He is a Best Choreographer Tony Award nominee for Kiss of the Spider Woman (1993); Cabaret (1998 and Best Director); and Little Me (1999). He was a Tony nominee against himself in 1994 for She Loves Me (1994) and Damn Yankees (1994). [3] His sister Kathleen Marshall (through 2011 a three-time Tony Award winner) collaborated with him on several projects, including Kiss of the Spider Woman and Damn Yankees. [1]

He debuted in the film industry as choreographer of several TV Movie adaptations of Broadway shows or starring theater actors. His directoral debut was the Emmy Award-wining TV adaptation of the musical Annie by Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin. He went on to direct the much anticipated adaptation of the Kander and Ebb musical Chicago in 2002. Marshall was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director, the film itself winning six. His next feature film was the drama Memoirs of a Geisha based on the best-selling book of the same name by Arthur Golden starring Zhang Ziyi, Gong Li, Michelle Yeoh and Ken Watanabe. The film went on to win three Academy Awards and gross $162,242,962 at the worldwide box office.[4] In 2009, Marshall directed Nine, an adaptation of the hit Broadway production with the same name starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman, Sophia Loren and Penélope Cruz, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Marshall then went on to direct Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth chapter of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean film series starring Johnny Depp, Ian McShane, Penélope Cruz and Geoffrey Rush,[5] which opened on May 20, 2011.[6]

Marshall lives in New York City with his life partner and frequent co-producer John DeLuca.[7] [8].
