Abstract Division is a long-standing collaboration of Paul Bax (known by his stage name as Paul Boex) and René van Geenen (known by his stage name as Dave Miller), a Dutch electronic music producer and dj duo.[1][2][3][4][5][6]


Early life and career

René was born in the city of Uden, North-Brabant, to a German mother and a Dutch father.[7] He discovered electronic music at an early age during the 80's while sojourning at relatives in Hamburg, where he visited record shops, searching mainly in the genres of new wave and italo, but he also became familiar with the productions of artists like the German Kraftwerk.[8][9][10] Before venturing deeper into techno, René began his career spinning vinyl records as an Italo disco and house dj in the 90's in and around Eindhoven area.[11] As a dj, he often visited RARE Records in Eindhoven and HOTMIX Records in Den Haag where he got to know more and more people in the techno scene in the Netherlands.[12][13] René started using the alias Dave Miller after reaching the finals of a dj competition at a music venue in Eindhoven, called the Effenaar in the year 1999 and got known in the scene under that name.[14][15][16] Before starting his collaborative project with Paul, René has already been performing and producing music together with numerous other Dutch artists under different aliases (Miller & Keane, Sculpturism, Miller & Bosscher).[17][18]Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).[19] René is also one of the founders of the record label Audiosculpture and its electro sub-label, Visitors Records.[20]Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).[21] He received his diploma in sound engineering in 2015 by the Avastudios in Holland.[22]

Paul was born in a small Dutch village called Sleeuwijk and started listening to hip-hop, house and techno in his mid-teens.[23] He was only 18, when he bought himself a couple of turntables and started developing his dj skills.[24] Before he went to study to Rotterdam, Paul often played at Poppodium Xinix in Sleeuwijk.[25][26] He was only 23 years old, working for a Rotterdam-based record label and music distributor, Triple Vision, when he decided to set up his own label, Dynamic Reflection.[27][28][29][30] The label celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2018 with a special release box set containing 5 EPs with the contribution of artists like Oscar Mulero, Blawan, Matrixxman, VRIL, Steffi, or Mike Parker etc.[31][32][33] The label also has a sub-label for digital-only releases, called The Nursery (former Digital Reflection)[34][35]Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).[36][37][38]. The next step in Paul's music career was when he met Jose Ángel alias Joton, the founder of the Spanish electronic music label New Rhythmic in 2007.[39][40][41]. Next to producing and performing, Paul continued his career as a booker for an Utrecht-based club, called Poema where he has become the initiator of the Mental Evolution event series in Holland.[42][43] In 2008, he booked René as a solo performance for a Detroit special with Robert Hood and this night has become the starting point of their lasting and productive musical journey.[44][45][46]

The beginnings

After the event at Club Poema, Paul got in contact with René and asked him whether he would be interested in a collaboration for his label, Dynamic Reflection and the two of them began producing together as Miller & Boex.[47][48][49] The very first time they sat together in the studio, they have experienced a very positive and productive flow.[50] The track they have ever made together titled Relevance was signed shortly after and released on the Portuegese-American label of Labrynth two years later.[51][52] Their first remix together was done for Patrick Walker from Forward Strategy Group, titled Phase Linear which appeared on the EP called Control Node on Dynamic Reflection.[53][54][55] Due to the unanimity they have experienced in the studio, they've decided to try performing together, too.[56] Their back-to-back acts were received well by the Dutch audience which encouraged them to go ahead as a duo.[57] Their first debut under their new alias Abstract Division was at Soenda festival in Utrecht in 2013.[58][59][60]

International breakthrough

They've started working on two separate trilogies, titled Form and Function and Time and Perception.[61][62] [63][64][65][66][67]. The track Compound Statement was discovered by the producers of the Netflix series Sense 8 who signed it as a soundtrack for the second Season (Episode 11) of the series.[68][69][70] For their Metropolis EP which was released in 2015, Function, Marcel Fengler and Oscar Mulero (under the alias Trolley Route) all made a remix.[71] After the trilogies, the duo started working on a new concept of a double EP named Contemporary Spaces which was released in 2016 on Dynamic Reflection, along with 2 more EPs dedicated for remixes done by musicians like Matrixxman or Perc.[72][73][74]. This was followed by numerous remixes and releases on international labels like Semantica, Lanthan Audio, Spectral Rebel, Just This or Figure Jams (a sub-label of Len Faki's FIGURE).[75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83][84][85] Since 2016, the duo is organising their own DECODE event series in Rotterdam venues.[86][87][88]
