Wikipedia and copyright

Hello Antiok 1pie! Your additions to Thomas Jefferson have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

• You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
• Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
• We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
• If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
• Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Aiming for high-quality edits

Hi, I've just copyedied your recent addition to the Thomas Jefferson article. Then I looked through your contributions and found a lot of your work has been reverted or repaired. Thank you for your interest in working on the project, but please take some time to read (or re-read) WP:COMPETENCE to learn how to better contribute. One key part of that page that seems to apply to your editing is the following:

• Repeated mistakes: If a user is making repeated mistakes, verify whether the user has been given any advice or instruction in how to do things correctly. Most users want to contribute productively but simply may not know how to do so. If it appears no-one has explained a problem with their edits, doing so should always be the first step. There are two ways to explain mistakes, (a) direct explanation and (b) showing the better way. In either case, use their talk page to introduce yourself, provide diffs while explaining the problems, and direct them to further readings or to forums such as Wikipedia:Teahouse or Wikipedia:Help desk. In the vast majority of cases, this will be sufficient and no further action will be needed.

Andrew Jackson

Hello. I have reverted your recent editions to the Andrew Jackson article. The primary reason is that of article size. Please see WP:TOOBIG. As this policy says, articles are generally not supposed to be above 99 kB in size. If you check by clicking on "Page size" on the left-hand side of the article, you will see that this article is already 102 kB, meaning that it is already pushing what Wikipedia standards regard as the maximum length of articles. An exception can be made for very high-profile articles like this one, but I do not think that it would be good to push the limits any further. If you want to add more information about Jackson to Wikipedia, I suggest adding it to a sub-articles about him or possibly even creating your own. If you could condense the information that you added about his slave ownership to one sentence, I think that perhaps that could stand in the article.

Also, based on your edits, I suggest you consult MOS:SAID. Wikipedia articles must be written from a neutral point of view, but by saying that a certain scholar "notes" something, you are implying that person's belief to be true, which is inconsistent with our standards. Hi, I tried to trim the article with this edit. Also, thanks for the warning. I removed the word "notes" from the article and added more neutral words instead.

I added a further trim. Firstly, I removed the sentence that said that Jackson never explicitly defended slavery. I don't know whether he ever defended slavery on a moral or philosophical level, but he absolutely did defend it legally and vigorously attacked advocates of abolitionism and the limitation of slavery throughout his life, so I find the sentence to be misleading. Additionally, it is placed with a source between two different pieces of information which are cited to a different source. You made the mistake of not copying the original source to where the first section of pre-existing text ended, making it seem as though part of the information cited to that source is actually cited to your new source, which it isn't. I also deleted all of the different assessments by historians. Jackson has been featured prominently in hundreds of books over the years. We don't need to list the opinions of each of the authors of those books regarding some facet of his life for the reader to understand the point. If we attempted to do what you did for this section everywhere in the article, the article would be very tedious to read and would go on infinitely.

Internet articles are not generally cited to the Bibliography. The Bibliography is intended for books and journals. I will fix that with the article that you cited. I also fixed a spelling problem for the names of one of the authors that was causing problems. Please do not reproduce the full bibliography citations in the body of the text of articles. You should use abbreviations like the ones in this article, or something similar.

I also just deleted the statement that you added saying that it was unclear whether Jackson's request to whip an escaped slave was carried out. I could not find that in the article to which the sentence was cited. Please remember WP:No original research. Do not add statements to articles without sources. Thank you.
